Tesco shoppers fume 'easier to get Oasis tickets' as they get stuck in queue for delivery slots

by · Manchester Evening News

Tesco has opened up its Christmas delivery slots for some of its customers to book today - but shoppers have taken to social media to express their disappointment with the service.

The supermarket chain opened its Christmas delivery slots to members of its Delivery Saver scheme this morning, but shoppers have reported they have been stuck in a queue.

To be a member of Tesco’s Delivery Saver scheme and receive priority access to the busy festive booking slots, customers can pay a monthly fee to receive benefits.

All members of Tesco’s Delivery Saver scheme should have received priority access to book their Christmas delivery slot this morning. But even those who have been given access have struggled to get a slot.

Shoppers have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction. Someone wrote on X: “Tesco Christmas delivery spots causing mayhem this morning”.

Some Tesco customers experienced technical difficulties trying to secure their Christmas slot this morning. One X user wrote: “Up at 5am to get in the @Tesco Christmas delivery queue. Got in at 6.05 only to have it crash and put me right back to the beginning of the queue. No Christmas delivery slot for me then! What a waste of time”.

This seems to be an well-known phenomenon for grocery delivery shoppers. Someone wrote: “Ahhh the annual tradition of how long will that queue be for a Tesco Christmas delivery slot”, while another person wrote: “Securing a Christmas delivery slot from Tesco is peak adulting! Deffo a 10/10 moment”.

Someone was so keen to get a Christmas slot that they woke up early on holiday to get in the queue. They wrote on X: “Up at 5:45 (whilst on holiday in Spain) to book my Christmas delivery slot. Still have 15 minutes to wait.”

One shopper compared the competitive dash to get a slot with the well-known concert booking race. They wrote: “It was easier & quicker getting @oasis tickets than it was a @Tesco Xmas home delivery slot ffs.” And another X user agreed: “Sitting in a queue for a Tesco Christmas delivery slot like it’s flipping Glastonbury.”

Some shoppers have admitted they left the race entirely and decided to book a Christmas slot with different supermarkets.

One X user wrote: “Decided not to join the chaos of Tesco Christmas delivery slots this year. Got a Sainsbury’s one a couple of weeks ago with no queue, no stress. Much better system with Sainsbury’s!”

However some people were successful in their quest to secure a Tesco Christmas slot. Someone commented: “Wow! Tesco Christmas delivery booked in under 10 mins! Got the date and time I wanted too. Nice one”, and another person wrote: “I must be one of the lucky ones. I had less then an hour wait and got my Christmas delivery slot with ease. Past years have been nightmares. Very happy.”

Some people think that Tesco should give priority booking for disabled people who are unable to go to the shops themselves. Someone wrote: “I will never understand why @Tesco doesn't allow disabled people, who rely on having their groceries delivered, early access to the Christmas Delivery slots. Every year it's a struggle to get a slot but they simply refuse to do anything about it”.

The remainder of Tesco’s Christmas delivery slots will be released to their customers next week on Tuesday, November 12.

What is Tesco’s Delivery Saver scheme?

Tesco has different options for being a member of its Delivery Saver scheme. The supermarket’s most popular option costs £7.99 per month and has the following benefits:

  • Same-day delivery
  • Home Delivery for any available slot
  • Early access to Christmas and Easter slots
  • With our Delivery Saver guarantee, we’ll give you coupons for the difference if you don’t save on delivery charges
  • Collection for any available slot
  • FREE standard delivery on all Marketplace products, including big brands.

A spokesperson from Tesco has said that there is currently no queue to book a slot through the website and that there were no technical issues with the slot opening. They added that they are advising customers to keep checking back as they sometimes release slots due to cancellations and to consider booking a Click+Collect slot instead as they have more consistent availability.
