Dr Hilary Jones, a familiar face on ITV's morning shows, has dished out some top tips for those hitting their 50s and beyond, revealing a "simple" food that costs less than 16p - and could ward off prostate cancer. The health expert was back on our screens on Tuesday, sharing his wisdom alongside Lorraine Kelly on her self-titled daytime show.

He said that some "basic" foods are actually superfoods during a chat about the ideal diet for the over-50s. It came as Lorraine asked what those who are "toddling into middle life and beyond" should eat, and Dr Hilary listed five key foods to incorporate into their diets.

He explained: "Eggs, which are rich in protein and Vitamin B, to keep muscle mass on board. Tomatoes which contain lycopene, an antioxidant, very powerful and considered to be helpful in preventing prostate cancer."

"Beans, rich in fibre, good for prevention of cardiovascular disease. Kale, rich in Vitamin K and prevents osteoporosis, and oily fish like sardines for omega 3 to stop cognitive decline."

Lorraine, taken aback by the simplicity, remarked: "So these are all things we can easily get? Not fancy". To which Dr Hilary confirmed: "These are simple, not expensive, all basics."

His advice comes backed by a 2016 study highlighting tomatoes' link to a lower risk of prostate cancer, also noting that lycopene-rich foods like tomatoes "may be protective against ... cardiovascular disease risk, notably stroke and hypertension".

As Dr Hilary points out, tomatoes are readily available and affordable, with a pack of six costing just 95p at Aldi - that's less than 16p per tomato.
