DWP sending important £150 letters to households in October

The Government will set out details of winter support scheme

Letters will be landing on doormats of million of homes over the coming weeks from the DWP setting out details of financial support over winter. Households are being contacted about the Warm Home Discount scheme.

This saves some of the poorest pensioners and other households money on their energy bills over winter. The £150 discount is applied automatically by energy companies in most cases.

The Government will be writing to those who are eligible for the scheme and letting them know the full details. The discount is applied directly to bills in the form of either credit or a voucher.

This can happen any time between October and March, depending on when energy companies decide to do it, providing a boost to bank accounts over winter. In order to qualify for the Warm Home Discount, people need to be receiving either the Guarantee Element of Pension Credit or certain other benefits.

Non-pensioner households could also get help if they claim certain benefits and have high energy costs. British Gas says of the scheme: "It’s there to provide support for those living on low incomes or pensions.

"If you qualify for the winter 2024/25 payment, you will have your one-off £150 discount applied by the end of March next year at the latest. The discount will be added to your electricity account as a credit. And if you're on Pay as you go, we'll send you a voucher you can use to top up your meter at a Post Office.

"If you live in England or Wales and we supply your electricity, you don’t need to apply, even if you applied in previous years. The Government decide who is eligible and will write to you if you are. We then make the payment to you by March 31, 2025."
