Martin Lewis has issued a warning over smart meters - saying: "That's not correct". The Money Saving Expert founder and ITV star, who is a BBC Sounds podcast presenter, spoke out on Twitter, now X, as the brand new £1717 energy price cap kicks in.

Martin said: "Lots of "I don't want to switch because you have to have a smart meter to do it." That's not correct. Of the four cheapest fixes on the market two require you to have a smart meter, two don't. So switch to your cheapest that doesn't (who your exact cheapest is depends on use and region hence why I say do a comparison)."

"Being on oil and electric so single fuel limited choice, also don’t want to tie in as currently hoping to move house in next 12 months, cap seems only option," a Twitter, now X user, said. "Martin I sent my meter readings in before the 1st as you said, sent in on the 27th of September, Eon only picked it up today, October 1st. Also I'm just out of contract. Does it matter that they didn't acknowledge me for days later when it's usually 24hours," another wrote.

Another typed: "Shared households/some people also have the added problem of finding a tariff that doesn't require a monthly direct debit." Another said: "Genuine question @MartinSLewis, I've had a smart meter for over a year. It's with EON, but the app keeps saying estimated up to 2 months ago on usage? Why does it do that?"

"Got to be honest, all the deals I see look to be pretty much the exact same price!" another posted. Another posted: "Genuinely curious, why are people still fearful of a smart meter? Of course, it's totally their choice at the end of the day, but is there still a perception they will be loosing out, afraid of big brother, or the fear of cut-off at the press of a button?"

"Does having a smart meter which one's current supplier made inoperable (by switching the firmware to 5G which is unavailable in the area) and can't/won't fix count as "having a smart meter" for the purpose of switching?" another commented.
