Aldi is introducing a major change for shoppers who buy chicken in its stores. Aldi is making a change to its fresh chickens from next week as part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare and shoppers will notice new packaging highlighting higher welfare for all fresh chickens sold at Aldi.

Aldi, which is rivalled by Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Asda and more, is rolling out the key change from October 30. The UK’s fourth largest supermarket has introduced new stocking density requirements for its fresh chicken, improving their quality of life.

It means fresh chickens from Aldi, all of which are sourced from British farms, now have 20 per cent more space than the industry standard. Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, said: “Animal welfare is of paramount importance to us, and we’ve been working hard with our suppliers to reduce stocking density to help us improve the welfare conditions for chickens.

“We’re already one of the UK’s largest providers of chicken and we’re proud that from next week, we can offer our customers access to higher welfare chicken at our unbeatable Aldi value.” The launch follows Aldi’s recent announcement that it hit its commitment to sell 100% cage free eggs more than a year ahead of schedule.

It comes as Aldi took home multiple gold medals for its ribeye and fillet steaks at the 2024 World Steak Challenge – making it more successful than competitors including M&S and Waitrose. The discount supermarket took home 11 medals overall.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, says: “What could be better than a perfectly cooked steak? As the nation’s biggest supplier of British beef, we’re constantly striving to ensure our British steak range is not only great value, but premium in taste as well, so that our shoppers can enjoy the luxury of great steak from home.

"This set of accolades from the World Steak Challenge reflects just this – highlighting our ongoing commitment to providing the best tasting British beef on the market.”
