MIRI (Oct 10): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has lauded Shell for continuing to be a “strong reliable partner” for Sarawak.

Speaking at the opening of the 13-storey Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) new upstream headquarters, One Shell Square Miri (OSSM), last night, Abang Johari noted the multinational group’s presence in the state since 1910.

“I am pleased to note that Shell has been a strong reliable partner to progress Sarawak’s future. Your presence here over a century is commendable – you together with the government of Sarawak have transformed Miri from a small village to a modern city,” he said.

Abang Johari described OSSM as not just another landmark structure, but also a new growth node for modern Miri.

“The work environment within OSSM is one of a kind that every Sarawakian and Mirian can be proud off.

“It is always nice to be back to Miri and to witness the development taking place in this city that is renowned for pioneering the oil and gas industry in Malaysia,” he said.

The Premier also called on Shell to continue the journey of growth in Sarawak especially in the green energy space, be it carbon capture, usage, and storage (CCUS) or other green technology.

“I hope to see you partnering with Petros, our very own Sarawak oil and gas entity in Sarawak’s oil and gas landscape.

“We have enacted legislature to promote and develop CCUS in offshore Sarawak. Petros is our resource manager to promote and develop carbon storage sites.

“Currently we have three CCUS projects, including one which involves the participation of Japanese consortium of oil and gas companies,” he said adding that all parties interested in CCUS projects should liaise with Petros.

Country chair of Shell Malaysia and vice president of Integrated Gas and Upstream Malaysia Siti Sulaiman said the energy efficient and modern office building for Shell Malaysia Upstream’s operations symbolises a new era of innovation and growth for the region.

“Our state-of-the-art, sustainable building embodies our commitment to driving progress towards an energy efficient future,” she said.

OSSM at Miri Times Square is sustainable and energy efficient.

The newly-launched multi-tenanted office building owned and managed by Pantai Bayu Indah Sdn Bhd with Shell as its anchor tenant is sustainable and energy efficient.

OSSM has electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, 100 solar PV panels on the roof generating approximately 80,000kWh (kilowatt hours) clean energy each year and a sophisticated rainwater harvesting system, which is used for the irrigation of vegetation at the garden deck on level 1 and ground floor.

The building is also home to Sarawak’s first Shell Café, which offers signature coffee blends and a wide variety of food comprising pastries, pastas, gourmet sausages, and wraps, which include meat-free options.

OSSM features Low-Emissivity (Low-E) glass panels on its façade, which minimise infrared and ultraviolet light while maximising natural daylight.

This innovation provides the interiors with an abundance of light and keeps the heat at bay, significantly optimising both lighting and air conditioning efficiency.

Additionally, OSSM is pioneering a first for Sarawak with its advanced floor destination elevator system that allows passengers to pre-select their floor at a port before stepping into the elevator.

Among those present at the ceremony were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; Minister of Transport Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin; Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi; State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki; and Shell plc executive vice president of Conventional Oil & Gas Peter Costello.
