ECoS, Huawei to enhance Sabah’s energy sector and accelerate renewable energy growth

KOTA KINABALU (Oct 24): The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) and Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Huawei Malaysia) announced a collaboration to leverage on latest technologies to enhance the local energy sector and accelerate renewable energy growth.

In a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalised at the 42nd CAFEO Conference at the Sabah International Convention Centre in Kota Kinabalu, the collaboration outlined plans to foster local talent in microgrid technology, establish a cutting-edge ‘Grid Forming’ Innovation Center (JIC), and explore the potential of microgrid projects for rural electrification.

Under the MoU, Huawei Malaysia will provide technical training and conduct workshops while ECoS will identify Sabahan youths for specialised training in energy management and microgrid technology applications.

Additionally, Huawei Malaysia plans to test advanced ‘grid forming’ technology (to mitigate intermittency issues of variable renewable energy such as solar and wind), including supplying equipment to support its implementation. At the same time, ECoS will craft the necessary regulatory guidelines and standards.

ECoS CEO Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration with Huawei Malaysia marks a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainable and innovative energy solutions for Sabah, including rural areas,” he said, adding that this collaborative effort will equip Sabah youth with technological skills and enhance community development in Sabah.

Similarly, Chong Chern Peng, Huawei Malaysia Vice President of Digital Power Business Group remarked, “This MoU marks the beginning of a transformative journey towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future for Sabah.”

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah and ECoS Commission Members, Datuk Nor Asiah binti Mohd Yusof and Datuk Dr Lawrence Thien Shin Hing.
