As winter approaches, energy bills are expected to rise over the colder months, but consumer champion Martin Lewis has offered stellar advice.

The Money Saving Expert took to X this week, advocating for a strategic switch from a steeper tariff plan. His advice is crystal clear: "Get off the Price Cap! Now's the time to compare energy - can you save £200+/yr? My full detailed briefing and best-buys are here."

Mr Lewis also stressed those who've secured their tariffs are exempt from price caps, adding: "If you have fixed your energy tariff you are NOT on the price cap. So the suggestion to ditch the price cap doesn't apply to you.

"You've already ditched it. The price cap is only on standard variable, ie default tariffs, which you're on if you've not actively switched."

This post turned out to be a financial lifesaver for some, like Chris Jackson, who bagged a monthly cut of £60 from his energy bill after taking on the advice.

He replied: "Seeing this made me double check my tariff, I'm now paying £60 a month less, thank you."

Chris isn't alone, as several other Brits also reported remarkable savings, amazed at how much they could keep in their pockets following Mr Lewis's recommendations.

One chuffed customer replied: "Just re-fixed My tariff for 12 months less than a month after fixing it for the first time. It's still with British Gas and is lower than the latest price cap."

Another happy switcher posted: "Switched yesterday, which - in theory - will save up to £400 this year (plus the credit back on my account)."

A third savvy saver shared their story, writing: "I was with Octopus who were recommending I pay £235 a month and changed to EDF for £176 a month on a 12 month fixed rate. Appreciate the advice Martin."

Mr Lewis has been pushing homeowners to "get off the energy price cap" as those sticking to variable rate tariffs could be frittering away hundreds of pounds every year.

Shop around and you might stumble upon some fixed energy deals that boast rates nearly £200 a year less expensive than Ofgem's new price cap, which leapt a staggering 10% from October 1.

Under the new rules, the average domestic energy bill will be soaring by £149 annually, catapulting from £1,568 to a hefty £1,717 per year for an average dual-fuel home in England, Scotland and Wales.

Mr Lewis made it clear he thinks people should abandon variable tariffs that mirror the cap, advocating for the budget-friendly deals available elsewhere. And, judging by the feedback, his words are proving to be golden guidance for many.
