Ryanair passengers say 'never again' as new airport fees implemented

by · Manchester Evening News

Ryanair passengers could face increased fees of up to £45 under new guidelines. The budget airline has updated its luggage prices once again, this time affecting passengers travelling with checked-in bags

The cheap ticket airline is known for its strict baggage policies and has 'sizers' placed at all of its airport gates to ensure that customers are following the rules. Passengers are only entitled to bring a small personal bag on board with them free of charge unless they upgrade to Priority boarding, which allows them to bring an additional large cabin bag, or pay extra for a checked-in bag.

Previously, Ryanair charged between £11.99 and £29.99 to add a 10kg check-in bag at the time of booking, or between £23.99 and £35.99 to do so afterwards or at the airport on the day of the flight.

Now, however, the 'fees' list on the airline's website states that passengers can expect to pay between £9.49 and £44.99 to add a 10kg check-in bag at the time of booking. The exact cost depends on the route and date of travel, meaning some passengers can expect to pay slightly less than before, but passengers paying the higher charge will now pay £15 more.

The fee to add a 10kg hold bag post-booking or at the airport has also increased and is now listed between £23.99 and £44.99, an increase at the higher end of £9. Meanwhile, the cost to add a 20kg check-in bag post-booking has been made cheaper for some passengers - changing from a price range of between £44.99 and £59.99, now from £39.99 to £59.99.

Ryanair didn't respond to BirminghamLive's request for comment on the price changes, however its website states: "Fee varies depending on the route and travel dates selected.

"Non-priority customers who have not added a bag to their booking can still purchase a 10kg check-in bag at the airport bag drop desk for €/£ 35.99-€/£40. Non-priority customers who bring their 10kg Check-in bag to the boarding gate may check it in against payment of a fee of €/£ 46.00 - €/£ 60.00."

BirminghamLive also reported last week that Ryanair had increased the price range passengers pay to upgrade to Priority boarding from between £20 and £38 to between £20 and £60.

Some passengers have taken to social media to complain about Ryanair's extra charges, as @micha4768 on X wrote: "OMG @Ryanair 40 quid for a 10kg hold bag, absolutely disgusting price wouldn't have been so bad for a 22kg hold, but that is DISGUSTING. I'll never again fly with you."

Others have said they don't mind paying extra for add-ons as the flights are still often cheaper than other airlines, as @IMegy71 said: "I bet it is still cheaper on Ryanair than other airlines, even with the additional charge."

If you're flying with Ryanair soon and want to avoid being charged for oversized luggage, luxury suitcase brand Antler has slashed £51 off the price of its Brixham Cabin Bag in its Prime Week Sale, which is the perfect size to use as a 'large cabin bag' on a Ryanair flight.

Passengers without Priority boarding can use Antler's Soft Stripe Underseat Cabin Bag, which is £130, but could save hundreds of pounds on upgrading to a full-size cabin case if you're a frequent flyer (make sure to check airline size regulations first).

You can see everything reduced in Antler's up to 40% off sale here. Or for a more budget-friendly option, WOUIYO for Ryanair Cabin Bag, which has been designed specifically to slot under Ryanair seats, is currently £21.35 instead of £26.99 - with an extra 20% on top of the discount for Prime customers.
