The retailer will move into the former H&M unit in Nottingham city centre

Major sportswear retailer Sports Direct has slashed prices in its Nottingham store in a closing down sale. A notice displayed on the shop's window, on Clumber Street, indicates that the retailer will leave the street in January 2025.

The city centre branch will only move a six-minute walk away, however, relocating to the former H&M unit on Lister Gate. Previously, a spokesperson for Frasers Group, which owns Sports Direct, has said the opening of the new store will take place in early 2025.

However, the 30,000 sqft store seems like it will open sooner than expected, with notices displayed on the windows of the Clumber Street branch announcing shoppers that the opening will take place in November. Discounts of 20 per cent off full-priced items are available in the store ahead of its closure.

A spokesperson previously said: "We are pleased to share that the Sports Direct on Lister Gate in Nottingham is set to open in early 2025. The 30,000 sq. ft store will give Nottingham customers access to the world’s best sports and lifestyle brands, as well as offer other brands from the Frasers Group ecosystem, including USC, GAME and Jack Wills."

The opening of Sports Direct on Lister Gate will come just over a year after Flannels, a luxury designer clothing shop selling brands such as Gucci and Saint Laurent, opened its doors on Lister Gate in October 2023. Flannels is also owned by Mike Ashley's Frasers Group and is located next door to where Sports Direct will be.

The shop was previously occupied by Swedish retailer H&M, which moved to the Victoria Centre in May. A number of other shops have left Lister Gate in recent years, including M&S Home, Boots and WH Smith.

According to the plans, the store on Lister Gate will employ 15 full-time members of staff, while the opening hours are yet to be decided. Besides the usual athletic gear that Sports Direct has on offer, the new store would also bring shoppers items from its sister brands, USC GAME, and Jack Wills.
