In a testament to its commitment to excellence, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has recently been feted with numerous awards from various international prestigious organizations in recognition of its sustained brilliance in business performance, leadership, sustainability, innovation, and corporate social responsibility.

Under the leadership of Manuel V. Pangilinan, the distribution utility remains steadfast in its dedication to creating a lasting impact on its stakeholders through initiatives focused on customer centricity, digital transformation, public service, and social development.

OUTSTANDING ELECTRICAL ENGINEER OF THE YEAR. Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho was hailed as one of the Outstanding Professionals of the Year by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

This year, Meralco has been honored by esteemed bodies such as the International Business Awards (IBAs), the HR Excellence Awards, the Cloudera Data Impact Awards, and the Asia IoT Business Platform.

The power utility secured eight Stevie Awards – including one Gold, three Silvers, and four Bronzes, at this year’s IBAs, which is often referred to as the “Olympics for the workplace”.

Meralco First Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer Raymond B. Ravelo, took home the Gold Stevie as Sustainability Hero of the Year in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand for the second year in a row.

Ravelo was commended for his strategic leadership in integrating sustainability into the utility’s operations through “Powering the Good Life”. The campaign, firmly based on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and characterized by a distinct focus on four pillars: Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity, secured the Silver award in the Sustainability Leadership category for Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.

“This recognition brings great pride to us in Meralco as it reflects our earnest commitment to sustainability. As we continue building a sustainable energy future, we will remain focused on elevating and evolving Meralco’s sustainability agenda to bring forth a brighter future for all,” Ravelo said.

Meanwhile, One Meralco Foundation (OMF) President Jeffrey O. Tarayao was bestowed with the Silver Stevie for Thought Leader of the Year, in acknowledgment of his visionary leadership of the distribution utility’s social development arm.

“These recognitions for Meralco’s CSR programs further strengthen our resolve to implement more initiatives that will enable marginalized communities to become more self-reliant,” Tarayao, who also serves as Meralco Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, said.

Digital transformation and customer centricity

Meralco’s exemplification of excellence is also reflected in its strong commitment to digital transformation, with the company being recognized in the recent Asia IoT Business Platform (AIBP) ASEAN Enterprise Innovation Award for its “Certified by Meralco (CBM) Platform” entry.

The power utility bested five other nominees in the general category, clinching the top spot with its pioneering entry, “Certified by Meralco (CBM) Platform: Uberization of the Meralco Service Application Experience.” This innovative solution is being hailed as a trailblazer in the Philippine electric utility industry, showcasing the power distributor’s cutting-edge workflow and standard-based solution.

“With Meralco’s drive for customer centricity and digital transformation, we continue to innovate by providing solutions such as the CBM platform. Our customers appreciate the convenience of a faster and more streamlined digital application process, cost transparency, and the assurance of reliable, high-quality service from certified service providers,” Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz said. “Moreover, we achieved groundbreaking results not just for our customers, but for our contractors and frontliners as well.”

The company, through the Meralco Data Platform (MDP), was part of the 57 shortlisted finalists in the Data and AI category at the AIBP ASEAN Enterprise Innovation Award.

The MDP has played a pivotal role in centralizing data across the power utility’s operations, resulting in more accurate analytics, streamlined data-driven processes, and integrated business operations. The four-arrow accolade is the highest level of recognition granted by ICD to companies that attained a score of at least 110 points in the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard (ACGS) assessment in 2023.

The recognition underscores Meralco’s unwavering commitment to adhering to the corporate governance code, rules, and regulations set forth by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Philippine Stock Exchange, the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corporation, and internationally endorsed corporate governance practices recommended by the ACGS.

The ACGS, developed by the ASEAN Capital Markets, serves as an evaluation tool to gauge the performance of publicly listed companies in the region. This assessment evaluates companies’ proficiency in stakeholder management, disclosure and transparency, board strategies, and shareholder rights. Meralco’s receipt of this esteemed recognition stands as a testament to the company’s resolute dedication to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance and maintaining a strong commitment to operating with integrity, fairness, and honesty to safeguard the interests of its shareholders and stakeholders.
