Ireland weather: Incredible U-turn teased following Met Eireann's dreadful day prediction

by · Irish Mirror

Ireland can expect a dose of weather whiplash this week, with a dramatic shift indicated just in time for the October bank holiday weekend.

After Storm Ashley wreaked havoc across the country on Sunday, Met Eireann has forecast another upcoming spell of wet and windy weather. It has pinpointed Thursday as a particularly unpleasant day, with widespread rain and gusty winds set to sweep the nation.

However, there is a silver lining on the horizon as the national forecaster has teased a major improvement in the weather. The meteorological agency has suggested that after a stormy start to the week, there is a chance of clearer skies and more stable weather on Sunday and Monday.

While uncertainty remains in the exact timing and scale of the weather U-turn, the possibility of a late burst of Autumn sunshine will come as welcome news for those planning to make the most of the October break.

Met Eireann said: "The weather will turn unsettled with rain and showers, heavy at times. Possibly turning drier and more settled towards the end of the bank holiday weekend."

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect, the national forecaster said: "Any mist will clear Tuesday morning, leaving a dry day for most with sunny spells and well scattered showers. Any showers will die out by evening. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C in mostly light southwest winds, freshening near west and northwest coasts during the evening.

"A good deal of cloud Wednesday with a few hazy sunny spells. Mainly dry too, though there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle in Atlantic coastal counties at times. Becoming breezier through the day with southerly winds gradually increasing fresh to strong and gusty. Highest temperatures of 12C to 15C.

"Rain in the west will become widespread through Thursday morning and afternoon with some heavy falls likely leading to some spot flooding. Highest temperatures generally ranging between 14C and 16C . Moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds will ease light for a time before veering northwesterly and strengthening again.

"There's some uncertainty in the timing on Friday but the rain in the east will clear through the day with sunny spells and showers following. Turning noticeably cooler with highest temperatures of just 9C to 13C with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

"Current indications suggest that rain will track eastwards over the country during Saturday morning and early afternoon with sunny spells and just a few showers following. Highest temperatures of 11C to 14C in mostly moderate west or southwest winds.

"There is a good deal of uncertainty in the details at present for Sunday and bank holiday Monday but indications are that there will be further rain and showers but possibly turning drier during Monday as high pressure to the south attempts to build."
