Energy Credits announced as part of last week’s budget will be paid from November 1, Cabinet will be told on Tuesday morning.

It is understood that Energy Minister Eamon Ryan will seek Government approval at Tuesday morning's Cabinet for legislation to allow for the payment of two energy credits.

As part of the Cost of Living package agreed as part of Budget 2025, the coalition agreed to sign off on two energy credits worth €125 each, or €250 in total.

It is now expected that the first energy credit could be paid from as early as November 1 to over 2.26 million domestic electricity account holders.

It is understood that the Government is aiming for the first energy credit to be “ready to go” from next month so that people will benefit from the credit over the billing cycle of November and December 2024.

The second energy credit will be paid from January 1 2025 and will be seen by householders over the January to February 2025 billing cycle.

The legislation will also provide for the energy credits to go to submeter households, or accommodation that might be divided into different units.

It will also include complementary measures to provide support for traveller households where the (Meter Point Reference Number) MPRN is registered to a Local Authority.

The Irish Mirror understands that the scheme will assess household electricity usage levels to ensure that the payment does not go to vacant homes.

This will not apply in situations where the account holder is a registered vulnerable customer on a financial hardship meter or is a registered micro-generation account.
