Five new businesses opening in Northumberland town as dozens of new jobs created

A coffee shop, supermarket and toy shop are among the new businesses opening in a Northumberland town, creating dozens of jobs in the process.

Starbucks and Lidl are two big name retailers opening in Berwick, both creating a number of new jobs. A new Post Office is also expected soon in the town centre, two years after the closure of the last town centre service.

An independent toy shop has recently opened, while a new charity shop will be making its way to the high street by the end of the year. It comes after a number of retailers closed their doors, including long-term family-run retailers Fairbairns and Longbone & Son.

STARBUCKS

The coffee giant was due to open a new drive-thru and restaurant on October 25. The premises has been opened at the site of former restaurant Meadow House Inn, just off the A1 at Highfields Roundabout.

It includes a coffee shop and restaurant, along with takeaway food and drinks. The development has created 15 full time and 12 part time jobs.

LIDL

Lidl will open an outlet at the Tweedbank Retail Park in Berwick towards the end of this year. Construction of the store is currently taking place and bosses have confirmed work is on track.

Dozens of new jobs have been created through the opening of the store.

POST OFFICE

A new Post Office is set to open in the town centre two years after the previous one closed.

Services in Berwick town centre came to an end in October 2022 following the closure of the outlet in the Four Seasons gift shop on Marygate. Along with the town centre closure, a branch on North Road also shut, leaving the only branch in Tweedmouth, meaning there are no branches serving the north of the town.

The new branch is due to open with in a Premier shop on 51-53 Castlegate in the coming days.

TREETOP TOYS BERWICK

The toy shop has opened at 103 Marygate. The shop, which specialises in sustainable handmade wooden toys, rubber wood toys, Eco recycled plastic and plastic free toys, was previously based in Kelso, Scottish Borders and has another outlet in Melrose.

HOSPICECARE NORTH NORTHUMBERLAND

The charity is aiming to open a new premises at 59 Marygate before the end of the year. The charity currently has an outlet on Violet Terrace but a spokesperson said they want to open a premises in a more central location.

The charity is recruiting for a full-time store manager and volunteers.
