When it comes to discount retailers, are you team Lidl or team Aldi? Either way, both supermarkets are renowned for their excellent bargains and value for money. That said, Aldi took the title of cheapest supermarket in 2023 after winning cheapest supermarket of the month for 11 out of 12 months last year. The budget retailer also took the crown in 2021 and 2022.

That track record shows no signs of abating this year,  as Aldi has been crowned cheapest supermarket for September 2024 - and every other month of the year so far.

We love to see what’s on offer in the ‘middle of Lidl’ and you’re lucky if you manage to basket an Aldi Specialbuy before it sells out, but how do the brands compare on essentials?

Consumer group Which? checked the prices of 59 popular groceries in various supermarkets last month to figure out which one was the cheapest, and found Aldi's basket cost the least at £102.68. Rival Lidl was just over £1 more expensive.

Which? also included loyalty prices where available, which showed that Asda was the next cheapest supermarket after Aldi and Lidl coming in at £112.19, and Tesco followed for those shopping with a Clubcard at £112.96.

You may not be surprised to see that Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket, coming in at £130.37 – over £25 more than Aldi. Ocado was second most expensive at £125.16, followed by Sainsbury's without a Nectar card at £119.19.

A further investigation by Which? looked into the total cost of 164 items, but Aldi and Lidl weren’t included in the research as they have a smaller selection of products.

Asda had the cheapest trolley total of £418.88 – and has been the cheapest supermarket (without a loyalty card) every month since January 2020 – except for July 2023, when it was beaten by Morrisons. However last month, there was only 1p difference between Asda and Tesco (with a Clubcard). Sainsbury's (with a Nectar Card) came in next at £421.16.

On this rare occasion, Sainsbury's (without a Nectar card) was the most expensive at £461.29, coming in above Waitrose, which cost £459.45.
