Simple car cleaning hack can save petrol and diesel owners more than £50 a year

Drivers have been urged to keep their cars clean this Autumn as it can have a significant impact on fuel efficiency. One expert has warned that a build-up of dirt and grime can have a negative effect on the aerodynamics

Motorists can pocket significant fuel savings this Autumn by keeping their vehicles spick and span, says industry expert Ian Wilson, Managing Director of Tiger.co.uk. He claims that drivers could save at least £58 annually just by maintaining a clean car, as dirt accumulation affects the aerodynamics, leading to increased fuel consumption.

A spotless car moves through the air with less resistance, meaning it requires less energy to operate. While other methods like hypermiling, closing windows, and switching off air conditioning might offer greater savings, combining these with a clean car could contribute to noticeable cost reductions over the remainder of 2024.

Wilson advises: "If you drive the UK average of 6,000 miles a year, you could save a minimum of £58 per year just by keeping your car clean."

He adds: "This is because your car's cleanliness impacts how aerodynamic it is. Little to no debris on your car means it can travel much more efficiently."

Tommy's Express Car Wash also highlighted the negative effects of grime build-up on efficiency, stating: "As dirt and grime build up on your car over time, rough surfaces cause the vehicle to become less aerodynamic, thus reducing speeds."

They further explained that cleaning your car allows for smoother airflow over its surfaces, which can significantly boost fuel economy.

They added: "So, no need to search for cars with better mpg if you're already in love with your current vehicle."

However, it's not just drag that should prompt motorists to clean their vehicles, as major components could become damaged over time. Endurance Warranty highlighted the risk of air filter parts becoming "clogged" over time, which can significantly affect vehicle performance.

They stated: "If a person does not replace their air filter when they should, the clogged airflow can impact engine performance which will have a secondary impact on fuel efficiency."

Specialists explained that a dirty air filter will usually appear grey, dusty, or darker than usual. Over time, this will lead to more contaminants getting onto the engine which can increase wear on the cylinders, pistons and bearings.

Motorists may also notice a reduction in engine power and may find their vehicle struggles to start.
