HMD shows The Better Phone Project Concepts

by · Nokiamob

HMD Global recently revealed some new concepts as part of their Better Phone Project announced in July 2024 as a unique initiative aimed at creating more meaningful phone experiences that help users find balance in their digital lives. The concepts include creative, functional designs that rethink the conventional smartphone and feature phone, offering both innovation and simplicity.

1. Pebble-Shaped Earbuds with Phone Features

One interesting idea is a pebble-shaped earbuds case called pager idea, which also doubles as a mini phone. The case includes a small round display and basic phone features like checking the time, handling calls, and video recording. The simplicity and portability of this design make it a unique companion for those who want to stay connected but avoid constant distractions. Its compact size and integrated features make it both practical and aesthetically appealing.

2. Feature Phone with Scribble Pad & Integration

Another standout concept is a feature phone that focuses on utility and functionality. This phone includes a 3-inch half-screen display, limiting excessive use and promoting quick interactions like checking maps or answering calls.

There’s also a cradle for docking the phone into a larger screen or speaker setup, allowing users to expand its capabilities when necessary. This device can be customized with secure attachments and even supports the option for lanyard/strap, making it perfect for those who need a functional phone on the go but want to avoid doomscrolling.

3. Small Smartphone with Core Features

HMD also showed a smaller smartphone concept that packs essential smartphone functions into a more manageable, minimalist device. With a 3-inch screen, it offers key smartphone features like navigation, messaging, and calling, while minimizing the temptation for endless scrolling. Its smaller size and reduced screen encourage shorter interactions, giving users more control over their time while still enjoying the benefits of modern technology. Hm, are we seeing a Nokia Asha phone here?

4. Smarter Watch Integration

A smartwatch concept was presented, designed to be integrated into the larger device setup. This wearable tech piece brings both fashion and functionality together, serving as a companion to the feature phone, allowing users to seamlessly manage their digital activities on the go.

For anyone looking to dive deeper into the Better Phone Project concepts, Raun Forsyth also breaks them down starting from 42 minute in the video linked here. He explains the thought process behind HMD’s designs, including the concepts seen above, and some more that I haven’t included. The discussion sheds light on how these devices are aimed at creating a healthier, more balanced relationship with technology.
