MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 promises makes a play for next-gen flagship phones

by · Liliputing

MediaTek’s new Dimensity 9400 processor promises up to a 35 percent boost in single-core CPU performance, up to 28 percent faster multi-core performance, and up to a 41 boost in peak graphics performance when compared with the previous-gen Dimensity 9300. It’s also said to bring memory and AI improvements.

At the same time, MediaTek is promising that its new chip is up to 40% more energy-efficient, which means that devices powered by the new chip should bring big performance gains while also offering longer battery life. No wonder there are rumors that Samsung has selected the new processor for its upcoming Galaxy S25 series smartphone lineup.

Here’s a run-down of some key features for the Dimensity 9400:

CPU

  • 1 x ARM Cortex-X925 core @ 3.63 GHz
  • 3 x Cortex-X4 cores
  • 4 x Cortex-A720 cores
  • 12MB L3 cache
  • 10MB SLC

Graphics

  • Immortalis-G925 MC12
  • 8K/60fps 10-bit video decode (HEVC/AVC/VP9/AV1)
  • 8K/60fps 8-bit video encode (HEVC)
  • Imagiq 1090 VPU

NPU

  • MediaTek NPU 890

MediaTek says the new neural processing unit is up to 80% faster when working with large language models for generative AI features.

The chip supports LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4 storage, and WQHD+ displays with refresh rates as high as 180 Hz. There’s also support for devices with up to three screens.

Other features include native support for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, sub-6 GHz 5G networks, and efficiency improvements associated with WiFi and Bluetooth performance.

The first phones with the new processor are set to begin shipping before the end of 2024.
