Driving in heavy rain and wet conditions can significantly increase the risk of accidents, making it crucial for drivers to familiarise themselves with key car functions that enhance safety.
One feature often neglected is the front windscreen defogging function, according to automotive experts at Motor Match. They explain, "Many drivers rely solely on their wipers when driving in the rain, but this isn't always enough.
"Rain and fog can affect central vision, so it's important to turn on the front windscreen defogging function as soon as you enter the vehicle. This helps maintain a clear view as soon as you set off."
They also warned against a common error: "Avoid accidentally pressing the vehicle stabilisation system button. This feature is essential in maintaining control in slippery conditions, and turning it off can dramatically increase the risk of skidding or losing control."
Another helpful but frequently underused feature is the mirror heating function, which aids in clearing water from the mirrors in rainy weather. "Many drivers don't realise that simply turning on the rear windscreen defogging function will also heat up the mirrors," the specialist pointed out. "This can greatly improve visibility by preventing water from gathering."
In addition to using these functions, it's recommended to take extra precautions before driving in heavy rain. "Check that your windscreen wiper blades are in good condition, and if you drive an older vehicle, consider upgrading to 'aero' wipers for better performance in the rain. Make sure to fill up with fuel before your journey, as traffic delays in bad weather can increase fuel consumption."

They also highlighted the importance of tyre maintenance: "Make sure your tyres have the recommended tread depth of 3mm so your car has enough grip on wet roads to avoid accidents."
Lastly, motorists should be mindful of fog lights. "Fog lights should be switched off once visibility improves," they advised. "Their brightness can obscure the vision of other drivers, increasing the risk of collisions."
