WhatsApp wedding invite scam: What to know about this and how to be alert
Scammers are now using fake wedding invites on WhatsApp to spread malware. Here's how to spot the signs and keep your device safe from this new digital trap.
by India Today Information Desk · India TodayAs digital wedding invites become more popular, cybercriminals have found a way to exploit this trend. Fake wedding invitations are being used to trick unsuspecting users into downloading harmful files.
A seemingly innocent wedding invite, shared as a downloadable file on WhatsApp, can serve as an entry point for scammers to access personal information on your phone.
HOW SCAM WORKS?
It usually begins with a WhatsApp message from an unknown number, containing a brief message about a wedding invite and an attachment.
These attachments, disguised as digital wedding cards, are APK files.
Once downloaded, these files install malware, giving hackers the ability to track your activities and access sensitive information.
HOW TO STAY SAFE?
To protect yourself from such scams, cybersecurity experts advise never to open files from unknown numbers.
If you do fall victim to cyber fraud, you can report it by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or by filing a complaint on the official cybercrime portal.
Stay cautious, and think twice before downloading any unexpected 'invites.'
