Apple has released a new firmware for select AirPods models.

New firmware available for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max devices

by · AppleInsider

Apple has released new firmware for older AirPods models, but there isn't any information about what is contained in the update.

Tuesday's firmware update increases the build number to 6F21, up from the previous version which was 6A326. It is only compatible with the original AirPods Pro, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and the lightning-equipped variant of the AirPods Max.

While the exact contents of the firmware update are unclear, the software likely includes various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements rather than new features, as the update is intended for older hardware.

The new firmware is installed automatically for users when the AirPods are plugged into their charging case and connected to an iOS device. There is no manual installation method for this firmware update.

The AirPods Pro 2 are also set to receive a new hearing assistance feature, which was announced by Apple in June and approved by the FDA in September of 2024. The feature aims to assist users with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Settings for this feature have already appeared in developer betas of iOS 18.1. Hearing assistance is expected to launch with firmware version 7B19 — which has not yet been released for the AirPods Pro 2.

Apple released new beta software for AirPods Pro 2 on October 15 without the hearing health features, though some press have previewed the update. The older AirPods models updated Tuesday will not be receiving the hearing health features.

How to check your AirPods firmware version

AirPods users can check the current firmware for their audio accessories by accessing the Settings app on their iPhone or iPad.

  • Open the Settings App
  • Select General
  • Select About
  • Select the AirPods you wish to view
  • A menu will appear showing relevant device information.
