If you're an iPad user, you might have been eagerly waiting to enjoy the latest features in the iOS 18 software update.

But Apple customers have now been warned not to install the latest update as the software is found to completely brick some devices.

iPad users have reported that new iPad Pros with Apple's M4 chip have turned off and could not be restarted after starting to install iPadOS 18.

Unfortunately for those who have been affected by the issue, there is no option but to hand in your affected device at the Apple store and have it replaced.

Apple has now confirmed that the update has been pulled for M4 iPad Pro models as it struggles to fix the unexpected bug.

iPad users have been issued an urgent warning not to download the iPadOS 18 software update as it is revealed to 'brick' the devices

iPhone users say Apple's iOS 18 update is RUINING their battery life - what to do if you're affected

On Tuesday, a Reddit user posted that they had experienced an unexplained issue after updating their 13-inch iPad Pro.

While updating from iOS 17 to iOS 18, they found that their iPad had turned off and could not be restarted.

The user wrote: 'I just took it to the Apple Store who confirmed it’s completely bricked, but they said they had to send it out to their engineers before they can give me a replacement even though I have Apple care.'

This does not appear to be an isolated incident as several users quickly responded with their own experiences of the catastrophic software failure.

iPads can usually be restarted by putting them into recovery mode, even if there has been a serious software error.

iPad Pros fitted with the new M4 chip have crashed irreparably after downloading the latest iOS update
On X, formerly Twitter, one iPad user reported that he had to wait hours at the Apple store after the iOS update crashed his iPad Pro

The affected users also noted that their devices could not be coaxed back to life with any of the normal restart options nor be put into recovery mode.

One user wrote on Reddit: 'They told me at the Apple store that it fried the motherboard. It's a badly tested update.'

Elsewhere online, users flocked to social media to share their frustrations with the disastrous update.

On X, formerly Twitter, one commenter wrote: 'Well iOS 18 immediately bricked my iPad. It's in a stuck state.'

'My iPad Pro (M4) bricked during the iOS 18 update... been 4 hours already my iPad remains in a black screen', one commenter added.

iPad users reported that their iPads immediately powered down or froze after downloading the update
The fatal error occurs at some point during the update process rather than after the installation has been completed

iPhone users SLAM the new iOS 18 software update - with one venting 'it makes me want to throw up'

Meanhile another replied: 'I had the same issue. Now my iPad is completely dead. Please kindly let me know how to get fixed.'

Unfortunately, if your device has been affected by the issue, Apple currently seems unable to fix the problem.

On X, one iPad user wrote: 'PSA: if you have an M4 iPad, do not update to Apple iOS18. It is bricking M4 iPads. I've been sitting here for an hour while the geniuses figure out what to do.'

Another frustrated commenter wrote: 'Just a warning don't update your iPad to ipad os 18, it bricked mine and won't turn back on no matter what.

'Had to go to the apple store and they have to replace it.'

The issue appears to be widespread, with dozens of customers reporting that their iPads were 'completely dead'
There are indications that the bug may be particularly severe since affected customers report that the iPads cannot be hard reset or put into recovery mode which is usually possible even in the case of a failed software update
A number of iPad users report that there is currently no way to fix their damaged iPads and that Apple has resorted to replacing affected models

Affected customers report that Apple is offering replacements for iPads bricked by the issue but it isn't clear if you will need Apple Care to receive one.

In response, Apple has now confirmed that it will temporarily pull the iOS 18 updated iPad Pros with the M4 chip.

In a statement provided to MacRumors, Apple says: 'We have temporarily removed the ‌iPadOS 18‌ update for M4 ‌iPad Pro‌ models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices.'

Apple has also stopped signing the update for these models, meaning that it will not be offered to users when they check for new software and Apple's servers won't activate the update if it is installed by other means.

The iOS 18 update was supposed to give the iPad the same home screen customisation options (left), which are now available on the iPhone, as well as introduce new Smart Script handwriting tools in Notes (right) among other features

That means iPad users will need to wait a little while longer to enjoy any of the latest iOS features like the improved Messages and Calculator apps.

The company has yet to confirm exactly what is causing this serious issue or why only some iPad Pros are affected.

Several affected iPad users reported having first installed the iPadOS 17.7 security update, rather than going directly from iPadOS 17.6 to 18.0.

It is possible that Apple expected most customers to install the update in one go so did not test this installation pathway as thoroughly.

This isn't the only issue facing Apple's latest batch of operating software updates.

iPhone users have reported that iOS 18 has been draining their battery far faster than normal.

The latest iOS update has been panned by Apple fans as 'one of the worst designs Apple has ever released'; particularly the 'clunky and weird' update to the photos app which is also available on iPad

However, since installing an update may take hours or days to finalise, some additional battery drain from background processes is expected.

A bigger issue is that some customers have branded the latest update as 'one of the worst designs Apple has ever released'.

Users have expressed their frustration with the 'clunky and weird' new Photos app as well as the lack of Apple Intelligence features which were widely advertised.

Apple has now confirmed that the first Apple Intelligence features will not arrive in the US until November while those in the UK will need to wait until December.

Apple has been contacted for comment.
