Reign blanked by Angel City, face long odds to advance to postseason

by · The Seattle Times

The Seattle Reign’s chances of making the playoffs might have been dealt a fatal blow Friday night at Lumen Field.

Defender M.A. Vignola scored in the 33rd minute and Angel City FC went on to defeat Reign FC 1-0.

Depending on the outcome of other matches this weekend in the National Women’s Soccer League, the Reign (5-13-5) might be eliminated from postseason consideration with three games remaining.

Angel City (7-12-4), which outshot Seattle 11-6, is also below the playoff line but remains alive.

With a total of nine corner kicks and multiple offensive opportunities during the run of play, Reign FC had the potential to cut the deficit, but it wasn’t enough.

Midfielder Ainsley McCammon, 17, made her first regular-season start with the Reign since she first signed with the team on July 19. McCammon became the youngest starter in club history.

The Reign’s remaining matches are at Utah on Oct. 13, home against Houston on Oct. 18 and at Orlando on Nov. 2.
