UW men’s soccer makes Big Ten semis with shootout win
by Seattle Times staff · The Seattle TimesJoe Dale’s goal on the fifth attempt of the shootout sent the Washington men’s soccer team past Michigan State and into the Big Ten tournament semifinals with a dramatic finish Thursday at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Ill.
After the Huskies (9-4-5, 5-3-3 Big Ten) and Spartans (5-7-4, 4-4-2) were scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, the two went to a penalty shootout.
Each team made their first three attempts, with Charlie Kosakoff, Nick O’Brien and Chris Meyers netting goals for UW.
After Egor Akulov’s goal on attempt No. 4, Michigan State’s Colin Arce missed, which set up Dale’s game-winner.
The fourth-seeded Huskies will next face top-seeded Ohio State in the Big Ten semifinals on Sunday. The Buckeyes are also ranked No. 1 nationally.
Michigan and UCLA will face off in the other conference semifinal.
More men’s soccer
• Carter Gay scored an equalizing goal in the 88th minute to give Seattle Pacific (6-5-4, 3-3-3 GNAC) a 2-2 draw with Montana State Billings (5-4-6, 4-2-3). Raymundo Mendez scored the Falcons’ other goal.
Women’s soccer
• UW’s run in the Big Ten tournament came to an end in the semifinals with a 2-0 loss to No. 8 UCLA.
The Huskies (10-6-3, 7-4-0 Big Ten) managed only two shots throughout the entire contest. They conceded an own goal off a corner kick in the third minute, and then Ayo Oke scored in the 35th minute to give the Bruins (15-3-3, 8-1-2) the 2-0 advantage.
• Seattle Pacific (9-2-5, 7-1-4 GNAC) and Western Washington (11-2-5, 10-0-3) played to a 1-1 draw. Ashlyn Valdovinos scored for the Falcons.
Women’s volleyball
• The Huskies continued their impressive late-season run with a four-set victory (25-21, 25-23, 14-25, 25-22) over No. 14 Minnesota (16-7, 9-4 Big Ten) in Minneapolis. It was the fifth win in the past six games for UW (18-5, 8-5).
Emoni Bush had a game-best 19 kills and Molly Wilson led the way with 15 digs.
• Seattle U and California Baptist (4-21, 4-9 WAC) went down to the wire, with the Redhawks (6-17, 4-9) prevailing in five sets — 21-25, 25-18, 25-11, 18-25, 15-13.
Merima Smajlovic had 16 kills and three aces, and Arianna Bilby had 13 kills and five blocks.
• Washington State (13-8, 8-4 WCC) beat Pacific (14-10, 4-8) in straight sets — 26-24, 27-25, 25-19. Sage Brustad and Katy Ryan were tied for a game-best 14 kills, and Lucie Blazkova led the way with eight blocks.
• Seattle Pacific (7-15, 7-7 GNAC) beat Simon Fraser (15-5, 11-2) in straight sets.
Men’s basketball
• UW forward Great Osobor is on the watchlist for the John R. Wooden Award for player of the year. Osobor is also on the watchlist for the Karl Malone Award and was named to the preseason All-Big Ten team. The Utah State transfer had 15 points, 17 rebounds and six steals in the Huskies’ season-opening win Tuesday against UC Davis.
Women’s tennis
• WSU’s Eva Alvarez Sande won both of her singles matches at the ITA Sectional Championships in Los Angeles. The No. 5 seed will face UCLA’s Elise Wagle in the quarterfinals and, if she wins that, will receive automatic qualification into the NCAA Singles Championship.
