UW men’s soccer tops No. 25 UCLA, secures No. 4 seed in Big Ten Tournament
by Seattle Times staff · The Seattle TimesThe Washington men’s soccer team clinched the No. 4 seed heading into the Big Ten tournament following a 1-0 victory over No. 25 UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Huskies broke a goalless battle when Zach Ramsey scored on an assist from Alex Hall in the 78th minute to give Washington the lead.
Jadon Bowton recorded a career-high six saves on the way to his third consecutive clean sheet. Bowton and the UW defense have held opponents scoreless in the last 296 minutes, last conceding a goal against Penn State in the 64th minute on Oct. 18.
Up next, Washington (8-4-5, 4-3-3 Big Ten) heads to Chicago for its first-ever appearance in the Big Ten tournament. The Huskies will open action on Thursday against fifth-seeded Michigan State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
OTHER SOCCER
• After a lengthy delay to start the game due to lightning, Bella Bonnett and Kailee Wilson scored just minutes apart in the second half as the Seattle U women beat Utah Tech 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament in Abilene, Texas.
The No. 3-seed Redhawks will face No. 2 Grand Canyon in the semifinals on Wednesday.
• Jeremy Opong and Richy Lapointe-Guevara each had a goal and an assist as the host Seattle U men (10-4-3, 7-1-1 WAC) rolled to a 5-0 win over Grand Canyon in the final game of the regular season.
VOLLEYBALL
• Kiune Fletcher and Madi Endsley each had eight kills, but Washington (17-5, 7-5 Big Ten) fell to No. 21 USC 25-11, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15 in Seattle.
ROWING
• The Washington men’s rowing team closed out its fall season by winning all eight races it competed in, including the Ben Porter Cup for collegiate/open men’s eights, at the Head of the Lake Regatta on Lake Washington.
The Huskies men’s top crew took the Ben Porter Cup in a time of 14 minutes, 29.350 seconds, nearly 50 seconds ahead of second-place Oregon. The Huskies also took the top-three spots in the collegiate 3V8+ event.
The Washington women’s rowing team finished in the top-three spots in the championship eight. UW also won the collegiate fours and the collegiate pairs.
The Washington State women won the collegiate 3V8+ event.
BASKETBALL
• Layne Kearns scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds, but the Seattle Pacific women (0-3) lost to Dominican 59-42 on the final day of the D2CCA Canadian Tip-Off Classic in Langley, B.C.
HOCKEY
• Jake Sloan scored in overtime as the host Tri-City Americans beat Everett 6-5 to snap the Silvertips’ (13-3-0-0) seven-game win streak.
