Frank Lampard makes exciting prediction about Aston Villa signing who is a 'great talent'

Frank Lampard expects Amadou Onana to prove to be an excellent signing for Aston Villa in the months and years to come. Midfielder Onana signed for Villa for a club record fee in the the summer from Premier League rivals Everton and scored important goals at the very beginning of the season in wins at West Ham and Leicester City.

Onana, who is still only 23, also netted in the Champions League win over Young Boys, too, and his presence in midfield next to compatriot Youri Tielemans has helped Villa to ease into their post-Douglas Luiz era, following his summer departure to Juventus.

The towering Belgian initially arrived in England when joining Everton from Lille, and he worked under Lampard at Goodison Park, where he made 20 appearances for the Blues prior to the manager's sacking in the winter. He netted a single goal in that time, in a defeat to Southampton.

Lampard, a Chelsea great and England regular during his playing days, managed the Toffees for a year between January 2022 and January 2023. During that time Onana arrived and played a role under Lampard, who saw midfield qualities and a potential to be realised. He believes that Onana can move onto another level again under Unai Emery at Villa.

“He is a great talent,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “He has many qualities. Thanks to his physical abilities, he is very strong defensively and he also regularly scores a goal. He was very important to us at Everton, but I believe that he will continue to grow at a team like Aston Villa, with a good coach, good environment and a lot of competition.”
