Will Bruno Fernandes miss Aston Villa match after second Man United red card in five days?

Manchester United's skipper, Bruno Fernandes, is set to miss a single match following his red card in the Europa League face-off with FC Porto on Thursday night. Fernandes was shown two yellow cards during the game against the Portuguese team for a high boot.

His second warning came with just 10 minutes left on the clock as he tried to steer the ball into the net. A dismissal due to a second bookable offence typically results in a one-match suspension, but UEFA rules confirm that Fernandes will be free to play in the upcoming Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The regulations state: "As a rule, a player or team official sent off by the referee is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition" (i.e. UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League or UEFA Super Cup). The UEFA explanation continues: "In the event of a serious offence, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment, including by extending it to other competitions." However, it's unlikely that UEFA will view Fernandes' sending off as a serious offence, so he should avoid a penalty which extends to the Premier League - meaning United can count on him being available to play against Villa.

As a result, United's skipper won't be available for the third matchday in the Europa League, which sees them heading to Fenerbahce on Thursday, October 24. Fernandes was visibly upset by the decision to receive a second booking for the challenge, as he rightly argued that he did not make contact with the Porto defender with his boot.

However, because it was a booking, VAR couldn't step in and overturn the on-field decision. Interestingly, Fernandes was sent off for United in their last Premier League game against Tottenham, reports the Manchester Evening News.

However, the club successfully appealed that red card decision.
