Belgium manager issues Amadou Onana injury update ahead of Man United clash

The Aston Villa midfielder was substituted after an hour of the Champions League win over Bayern Munich

Belgium plan to play Amadou Onana in their UEFA Nations League double-header after revealing the Aston Villa man has had ‘positive’ test results.

Onana, who has been a stellar signing since joining the club from Everton in the summer, was taken off in the second half of the Claret & Blues’ 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

He was replaced by Ross Barkley and there are now question marks over his participation in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

However, Domenico Tedesco briefed the media ahead of Belgium's games against Italy and France, saying: “Onana has a small problem, but an MRI was positive and otherwise we will replace him with a promise [youngster]. He will try to play, but we will monitor him.”

Unai Emery will address the 23-year-old’s situation at his pre-match press conference later on Friday – but may not be thrilled to learn that Belgium plan to use Onana quite so extensively.

The midfielder has started every game so far this season - two in the Champions League, all six in the Premier League, away to Wycombe in the Carabao Cup and in both of Belgium’s previous matches against Israel and France.
