Former Red and Champions League winner Xabi Alonso is set to return to Anfield for the first time as a manager

Liverpool continue their UEFA Champions League campaign tonight with a hotly-anticipated match against Bayer Leverkusen. The fixture will see Arne Slot go up against Leverkusen head coach and former Red Xabi Alonso, who guided his side to their first-ever Bundesliga title earlier this year.
It marks the Spaniard’s first return to Anfield as a manager, and he will know all too well the challenges in store. Liverpool are enjoying an impressive run of form, currently sitting top of the Premier League table and are unbeaten in six games.
Leverkusen are fourth place in the Bundesliga, having won four games out of nine. Alonso – who was in Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League-winning team – was tipped as a favourite to replace Jürgen Klopp when the former manager announced his decision to leave the club in January.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, he told Sky Sports: “Maybe tomorrow I will take a little walk or a run, but there is no time for tourism. I know the city very well, I loved it, but tomorrow I will focus on the game and only the game.”
Liverpool and Leverkusen meet in the newly revamped Champions League, which has seen the group stage system scrapped for a new league phase consisting of 36 clubs. Each side will now play eight matches against eight different teams in the new league phase, rather than facing the same three opponents twice.
The top eight sides will progress to the round of 16, while the teams placed ninth to 24th will play a two-legged knock-out phase play-off to secure their place in the last 16. Liverpool and Leverkusen are so far unbeaten in the competition, with the former sitting in second place in the table after taking all three points from their 1-0 win against RB Leipzig last month.
Leverkusen’s last fixture ended in a 1-1 draw to Brest, which has left them sixth. So as both sides gear up for their latest European fixture, here’s how you can watch Liverpool vs Bayer Leverkusen absolutely free.
