Former England wing scores extraordinary try after penalty kick goes horribly wrong

A missed penalty ended up with a former England wing getting over for a bizarre try on the weekend

Former England wing Semesa Rokoduguni made a bizarre first impression on his Doncaster Knights debut - turning a fluffed penalty into a try.

The Knights ran out 45-31 winners over Ampthill in the English Championship, with the former Bath winger being outshone by ex-Dragons loanee Jordan Olowofela, who bagged a hat-trick.

However, Rokoduguni's score at the death will likely be remembered longer than any of the other 11 tries at Castle Park, given how comical it was.

In the final seconds of the match, replacement fly-half Morgan Bunting lined up a relatively straightforward penalty in the Ampthill 22 as Sir Ian McGeechan's side looked to seal their victory.

However, he sliced the kick cross-field, with Rokoduguni chasing up to gather and score. While team-mates celebrated the odd score, Bunting still looked disappointed at shanking his kick wide.

Funnily enough, Bunting managed to nail the conversion despite having just missed an easy one off the tee.

Some on social media had questioned whether this was even legal - given the penalty essentially served as a cross-kick.

World Rugby's laws state that "if the team indicates to the referee the intention to kick at goal, they must kick at goal". Therefore, as long as the referee is satisfied it was a genuine attempt at goal, then this is fine.

"Pleased to start with a win, but we'd like to play for the full 80 minutes," said McGeechan afterwards. "We let Ampthill back in, but we know we have a game plan in which we can score 45 points. But we have to keep the opposition under pressure for longer."
