Dexter Lawrence’s Giants dominance would fit in any era

· New York Post

Dexter Lawrence is more of a Monster of the Meadowlands than anyone thought he would be, or could be.

He is 340 pounds of unblockable interior force, looking very much like the heir to the Aaron Donald throne.

“Aaron Donald is the greatest to play this position I feel like … well, he’s definitely up there,” Lawrence told The Post. “I still got a lot to prove, and I don’t think I’m where I know I can be yet. I just gotta go out there and prove it each year. I think greatness is consistency over a long period of time, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

No one would argue with the idea that Dexter Lawrence could have played for the Giants in any era.

“I think I could have played in any era,” Lawrence told The Post.

What makes him say that?

“ ’Cause I know my attitude towards the game, and I understood their attitude towards the game. Back then it was just a bunch of hard-nosed people working like it was a regular job dang near, and it’s some guys that just grinded and just talked a lot of a s–t and made it bloody every week. That’s the kind of player I am.”

Sexy Dexy (six sacks) has been The Straw That Stirs the Drink for defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, the BIGGEST reason why the Giants lead the league with 22 sacks, a rare combination of size, explosive power, smarts and desire.

I ask him if he ever sees fear in the eyes of defensive linemen.

“Sometimes, yeah, I can see it,” Lawrence said, “and that’s when you gotta attack.”

It isn’t his trash talk that instills fear.

“Right now it’s probably like a B-plus,” Lawrence said. “It’s still early in the season.”

It’s his relentless quest to dominate the man — or in his case men — in front of him.

“How many times I can dominate him more than he can dominate me?” Lawrence said.

Is there anybody in the league that can dominate you?

“Nah, I don’t think so,” Lawrence said. “Maybe with a cavalry, but that’d still be a hard job for ’em.”

He was supposed to be little more than a run-stuffer when former GM Dave Gettleman drafted him in 2019 with the 17th pick as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade with the Browns. The trade was panned at the time. Not now.

“Some of the things that he’s gonna have to do is be able to fight through those double-teams, which he has,” Brian Daboll said. “It’s not an easy thing. There were times last week where there’s three guys on him. He understands that when he gets his opportunities, he’s gotta make ’em go … very thankful that he’s on our football team.”

Triple-teams?

“I tell ’em they have to do it, honestly,” Lawrence said. “It’ll be hard to block me 1-on-1. It’s part of my job, and it’s where I’m at in my career, and I’m embracing it. I don’t see it as punishment or trying to hinder anything. It’s who I am, it’s my world that I live in, I just gotta embrace it.”

Especially now with Kayvon Thibodeaux (wrist surgery on Wednesday morning) expected to miss Sunday night against the Joe Burrow Bengals and likely beyond.

“Imposing your will is putting somebody in a position where it’s nothing they could really do to stop you,” Lawrence said, “and that’s being a dominant defensive lineman in my eyes.”

Brian Burns stopped by obviously having seen Lawrence on those Chunky soup commercials. “Does that Chunky soup help you do that?” Burns wanted to know.

“Yeah, I’m getting sacks to help save hunger, man, for sure,” Lawrence said, and laughed.

Burns: “He can’t be blocked 1-on-1. At all. Or at least not for the whole game.”

Micah McFadden was asked what it’s like playing behind Sexy Dexy.

“Easy,” McFadden said, and laughed. “He’s really good at taking on double-teams which is one of the hardest things for defensive linemen to do. Obviously he’s about the size of both of the linemen usually blocking him. Having somebody like that, it’s a weapon, man.”

Lawrence has grown immensely as a leader and believes the best is yet to come.

“I don’t think I’ve scratched where I can be,” Lawrence said.

He was asked why he was wearing shades standing at his locker.

“Just to look cool,” Sexy Dexy said, and smiled. Only a fool would tell him he doesn’t.
