MIRI (Oct 9): Malaysia will have an international standard BMX (bicycle motocross) track when the ‘Velosolution Pump Track’ in Miri is fully completed in February next year.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting said the RM600,000 project is funded by his Rural Transformation Project (RTF) grant, and complies with the international standards of the sport.

“This is the first pump track of its kind to be built in Malaysia that complies with international standards.

“Also, with the Velosolution agent here, we are now looking to participate in the international pump track championship league,” he said.

The Piasau assemblyman said this to reporters when met after inspecting the project site at Taman Bulatan here, accompanied by Velosolution Malaysia agent Vince Yong.

When completed, he added that the state will not only be able to organise events at state- and national-level, but also at world-level.

“Initially, we will promote the extreme sport and the pump track in Miri. From there, we can expand and attract international audiences, as well as host global competitions here,” he said, adding that the goal is a step-by-step process.

Meanwhile, Yong said similar to the single-seater racing of Formula One, Velosolution also possesses a brand of BMX endurance racing called ‘Velosolutions-UCI World Pump Track Championship’.

“Like Formula One, Velosolution holds races in several countries, such as Germany, Australia, the United States, Sweden, New Zealand, Switzerland, Canada, Italy, the United Kingdom, and several other European countries, as well as China.

“We will have another international standard track when the Miri pump track is completed later. Following which, it is hoped that Malaysia will send participants to compete in the world championship later,” he said.

Velosolution is the world’s leading pump track developer with approximately 700 tracks globally.
