Odegaard, Gabriel, White - Arsenal injury news and return dates ahead of Newcastle United clash

by · football.london

Arsenal will be hoping for a swift resolution to their deep injury problems of late, though in fact the best thing in this situation may actually be for Mikel Arteta to employ caution.

The likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori - just a selection of the stars Arsenal have been without in recent times - may hold such importance to the way this team functions, though amidst a prolonged Premier League title battle with Champions League ambitions to consider alongside that too, not rushing their players back to action is going to be key in keeping each and every single one injury-free.

Besides, rivals Manchester City are experiencing similar issues and have had their squad decimated to an unbelievable point as of Wednesday night.

So whilst returning faces this weekend - of which there may be one - may be desirable, it will not be an entirely negative point to allow the injury list to clear at its own pace - both before and after the upcoming November international break, for the sake of outlasting their competitors.

Arteta has since addressed the media with a number of updates on key players provided. With that being said, football.london has rounded up the latest Arsenal injury news before the trip to St James' Park on Saturday lunchtime.

Ben White

Injury: Unknown.

White had started the club's three prior matches before the cup meeting with Preston, including switching to a central defensive role against Liverpool. "He was struggling at the end of the match so he wasn’t available for tonight’s game," Arteta responded, explaining his absence against Preston.

Just two days later, doubt is still being cast over his fitness with Arteta unsure if he'll able to return. "With Ben we don’t know yet," Arteta admitted in a press conference. "He could not train so let’s see what happens."

Possible return date: Unknown

Gabriel Magalhaes

Injury: Knee.

Gabriel went down after a challenge from Darwin Nunez against Liverpool. The back of his left knee was hit and despite trying to play on, Arteta had to sub him off shortly after. The Brazilian was spotted with a large ice pack over his knee when sat on the bench.

After using Instagram to show he was using a compression sleeve to aid his recovery, he was unsurprisingly absent from Wednesday night's Carabao Cup game at Preston. Arteta said: "We’re still assessing him. It doesn’t look that bad. He was much better the next day. Too soon to say when he’ll be out. He could not train, obviously he’s out at the moment so let’s see how he evolves over the next few games."

However, ahead of the Newcastle clash, Arteta was able to provide a positive update. "Yes it’s good news on Gabriel," he revealed on Friday. "We have a training session today. If he’s able to do that he’ll be in the squad."

Possible return date: Unknown

Martin Odegaard

Injury: Ankle.

Playing for Norway, Odegaard suffered an ankle injury during a UEFA Nations League match against Austria in September. He was expected to be out for around two months after being assessed, so return before the next international break.

This was at least Arteta's hope, who after last Sunday's Liverpool game also admitted the captain is 'a bit far away' from being able to play, as he had not yet returned to training. Norway national team boss Stale Solbakken has also expressed his hope to have the player available for their final Nations League fixtures against Slovenia and Kazakhstan this month, especially since they blew their group wide open by losing both matches in October.

And it seems both may get their wish. football.london reported that Odegaard has provided both club and country with a major boost this week as he pushes to make the squad that travels to Newcastle. Despite that hope, Arteta has ruled him and Riccardo Calafiori out of the clash.

"Riccy and Martin are out definitely," he openly said on Friday morning before the long trip to Tyneside.

Possible return date: Inter Milan (A) - Wednesday, November 6.

Riccardo Calafiori

Injury: Knee.

Calafiori was forced off during the Champions League clash at home to Shakhtar Donetsk after slipping in a challenge. Reports in Italy suggested that he will only be out for several weeks. The issue is not described as being serious.

So far he has missed the draw with Liverpool and the Carabao Cup win at Preston, after Arteta provided the assessment: "He will be out for a few weeks, I would say." Following that update, it was no surprise the Arsenal boss also confirmed he would not be in the matchday squad to face Newcastle.

Possible return date: November/December.

Kieran Tierney

Injury: Hamstring.

Kieran Tierney remains out of action after suffering a devastating hamstring injury playing for Scotland against Switzerland during the Euro 2024 group stages in Cologne over the summer. This stopped what seemed to be a transfer plan in its tracks, as the defender was expected to leave the Emirates Stadium having spent last season on loan to Real Sociedad.

However, he remained a Gunner and Arteta has hinted he could be returning soon.

Possible return date: November/December.

Takehiro Tomiyasu

Injury: Unknown.

Takehiro Tomiyasu was again absent from the matchday squad against Preston after missing games against Shakhtar Donetsk, Liverpool and Bournemouth. The 25-year-old has struggled with injury for most of the calendar year, playing only six minutes of football since the 2024/25 season began.

"We don’t know [how long he will be out for]," Arteta admitted when asked, adding: "It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

"But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape - and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support and hopefully he will be fine."

Possible return date : Unknown.
