Chelsea learn Rubin Amorim Manchester United arrival plan ahead of Premier League clash

by · football.london

Ruben Amorim looks unlikely to be in the Manchester United dugout for Chelsea’s Premier League visit to Old Trafford on Sunday.

United have agreed a compensation package with Sporting CP for the 39-year-old to be the successor to Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday. Interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of United’s Carabao Cup win over Leicester City on Wednesday.

Chelsea are set to play at Old Trafford this weekend, when Van Nistelrooy - who was brought in as an assistant by Ten Hag this summer - is expected to lead United once again.

Hinting about Amorim's appointment schedule after full-time, Van Nistelrooy said: "For now the focus is on Chelsea on Sunday and I do not really look any further."

Reports in Portugal have suggested Sporting are unwilling to allow Amorim to exit immediately. Record makes the claim that the Portuguese champions want to wait until the next international break to release their manager - and that United are obliging to that request despite initially wanting him in place for Sunday.

And now, The Athletic reports that part of the agreement will see Amorim remain in Protugal for their next three games meaning his first game in charge at Old Trafford is likely to be against Ipswich Town on November 24.

It would mean Amorim would not face off against Chelsea for the first time in his career until the reverse tie at Stamford Bridge in the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season in May, barring a prior FA Cup encounter.

Regardless, each club will sport different coaches to the two who presided over last season's match-ups. And it is furthermore the first time either coach has faced United and Chelsea respectively during their coaching careers.

Chelsea go into the match on the back of Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the League Cup. United defeated Leicester 5-2 in what was only Van Nistelrooy’s 51st senior game in management. Enzo Maresca has overseen just 82 matches during his senior coaching career.
