Pittsburgh Steelers line up Russell Wilson decision as Justin Fields gets bad news

Justin Fields has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to an impressive 3-2 record since taking over from the injured Russell Wilson - but the veteran is expected to return as the starter

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still tight-lipped about who'll throw the ball this weekend, though whispers around the locker room suggest Russell Wilson might soon snatch the QB reins from Justin Fields.

Despite Fields' pitch-perfect start leading to three wins on the trot, the last two matchups have left fans grumbling as his game turned unpredictable. Initially benched in favour of Wilson, Fields was thrust into the limelight after the seasoned pro was sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Looking ahead, the Steelers are preparing for a faceoff with the Las Vegas Raiders this weekend. Wilson, having shaken off his injury woes, is back throwing the ball in practice and could be eyeing up a return imminently.

ESPN expert Adam Schefter has been on air projecting that the Steelers' coach Mike Tomlin is itching for Wilson to command the offense and will bide his time, monitoring if Fields' form continues to drop before swapping signal-callers.

Meanwhile, ex-Steelers tactician Tony Dungy has been praising Wilson's comeback quest, notably telling press: "He threw some balls against the Steelers first-string defense that were just right on point. When you saw the guys react to him and shake their heads in admiration, I'm thinking, when this guy gets back in there, he's gonna give them a lift of confidence."

Fields has indeed given the Steelers an offensive edge with his nimble feet, but his throwing game left much to be desired in their defeat to the Dallas Cowboys, managing a mere 15 completions out of 27 attempts, leaving wideout George Pickens visibly exasperated.

Before the season kicked off, Wilson was handed the Steelers' offensive captaincy and was chosen as the starting quarterback by Tomlin, who evidently regarded him as the superior choice.

Tomlin, when quizzed on the team's quarterback hierarchy recently, remarked: "We're in a little bit different place as I stand here today with Russ. First we'll see if he's able to obviously pull it off and get through the session, and if he does, what the quality of that works like, his ability to protect himself."
