Roy Keane tells FA to 'get busy' and names top candidate for next England boss

Lee Carsley is currently England's interim head coach as the Football Association conduct their search for a new boss following Gareth Southgate's departure earlier this year

Roy Keane has called on the English FA to launch an audacious effort to land Pep Guardiola as the new Three Lions boss.

Lee Carsley is currently in charge of the England side on an interim basis after Gareth Southgate departed following defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Former Everton midfielder Carsley has led the team for the past two international breaks and is expected to be in the dugout for November fixtures against Greece and Republic of Ireland.

Carsley, in addition to figures such as Eddie Howe, Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, has been suggested as a candidate for the role. Though, Keane believes England should make a play for Guardiola.

Manchester City's manager is currently set to see his contract expire at the Etihad Stadium. Ex-Manchester United captain Keane suggests that could provide an opportunity.

"The FA have to go for the best guy, I don't know if finances will play a part in it," Keane told ITV.

"If Lee obviously rules himself out, and isn't interested, and that seems to be the noises coming out, then the FA better get busy and get the right man. Go after Pep Guardiola, go for the best. Pep's contract is up the summer."

Guardiola has already been asked about the potential of taking the Impossible Job. The Catalan coach has not yet ruled out extending his stay with City however.

In an appearance on Italian TV, Guardiola said: "I haven't finished my career at Manchester City yet, I still have to think about it," he replied.

"It's not true that I'll be the England coach. I haven't decided anything yet, if I had decided my future at Manchester City I would say so, anything can happen in life."

Carsley has also been non-committal about his prospects. The former Republic of Ireland international has appeared to both rule himself out and back in during recent days.

Speaking after victory over Finland on Sunday, Carsley said: "This job deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies and I am still on the path to that.”

The interim boss was then pushed if an opportunity at the top job had arrived too soon. "Definitely not. I tried to make it as clear as I could," he then said.

"My remit was for three camps. I’m not part of the process but it deserves a top coach."
