Alisson confirms newest member of Liverpool leadership group under Arne Slot

Alisson has revealed the newest member of Liverpool's leadership group after the club entered a new era under manager Arne Slot.

Following the departures of captain Jordan Henderson and vice-captain James Milner in 2023, Alisson was part of a five-person leadership group established by Jurgen Klopp. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold were installed as captain and vice-captain respectively, with Alisson, Andrew Robertson and Mohamed Salah also given extra responsibility.

And it appears that group has now been expanded, with World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister joining after an impressive debut season at Anfield. "I am committed to this club 100 per cent and that involves being part of the leadership group," Alisson told BBC Sport.

"Me, Virgil, Robbo, Trent, Mo – Macca [Alexis Mac Allister] now is someone that is bringing his experience as well. He is young, but he has achieved so many things already, and that brings him to a standard of good leadership.

"We have a lot of young players, new players coming in, a completely new staff. When we changed, not everything was going wrong. The challenge for us was to keep the good things, pass these things to the staff and the players coming in, and embrace the good stuff that the new staff are bringing.

"It was a big challenge for this leadership group and I really believe we are doing quite well. We are sharing the responsibility and telling the young players they need to step up as well. This club is special and the people who work here are special."

Alisson recently revealed that he rejected a move to Saudi Arabia over the summer and is open to extending his Liverpool deal beyond 2026. "I want to honour my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one," he said last month.

"I am really happy here. My family is happy. I never got to the point where I was talking about wages and things like this. It was just interest, but when you hear about the numbers the other players are getting you are a little bit attracted.

"That is normal. At the end of the day, you play football for love, it is the thing you like to do, but it is our profession and we want to use the years that we have to make the most of it. I think I am open to that personally but not now. Now is not the time."
