Joe Flacco’s hefty Colts salary, wife’s brutal advice, bumper net worth after NFL career
Joe Flacco has been named as the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts and will continue his 17-year NFL career - which is one that has garnered millions of dollars
by Abbie Meehan · The MirrorJoe Flacco is set to return to the pitch as the starting quarterback for Indianapolis Colts, continuing his impressive 17-year NFL career.
The former Super Bowl champion signed a one-year contract with the Colts back in March, and he has since ousted previous starter Anthony Richardson following a shaky start to the season. Flacco stepped up in the week four match against the Pittsburgh Steelers, securing a 27-24 victory, and also shone with three touchdowns and zero interceptions in a close 37-34 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Since then, the quarterback has been the starter for every game and is slated to start against the Minnesota Vikings in week nine, as reported by ESPN. Despite having played for six teams throughout his NFL career, the 39-year-old has become a mainstay in the league, earning the nickname 'Joe Cool' for his ability to stay calm under pressure during both the regular season and play-offs.
So, what does Flacco earn, what's his net worth, and what pearls of wisdom was he given from an unexpected source during his time in the NFL?
What is Joe Flacco's net worth?
Celebrity Net Worth reports that Flacco has amassed a staggering £65.6million ($85m) from his 17-year stint in the NFL. The quarterback's earnings exceed £134.7m ($175m) in NFL salary alone, placing him among the league's top earners so far.
This monumental net worth is attributed to the lucrative contracts he signed with both the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos. After the Ravens' 34-31 Super Bowl victory against the San Francisco 49ers, Flacco became a free agent, making him eligible for a significant contract with any major team.
So, on March 1, 2013, he signed a new deal with the Ravens valued at over £92.8m ($120.6m) for six years, making him the highest-paid player in the NFL at that time. During this period, Flacco earned a base salary of roughly £15.3m ($20m) over six years, equating to £130,000 ($170k) per in-season day.
In 2016, he extended his contract with the Ravens, which included a £46.1m ($60m) signing bonus, the largest in the league at that point.
After his time ended in Baltimore, Flacco moved to the Broncos and pocketed £23m ($30m) in the 2019 season despite participating in just eight games. He then transferred to the New York Jets and signed a £1.15m ($1.5m) deal, but actually raked in more than £11.5m ($15m) due to a contract hold-out with the Broncos.
He continued to earn additional income from the Jets in 2021 and 2022, with his 2022 salary totalling £2.6m ($3.5m).
What is Joe Flacco's salary after his Colts deal?
Flacco has secured a handsome salary after signing with the Colts, as the new deal can fetch up to £6.6m ($8.7m) for him this season. This agreement ensures the quarterback takes home a secured chunk of £3.4m ($4.5m), as per Rapoport.
In an impressive figure for a backup veteran quarterback, Celebrity Net Worth highlights Flacco's earnings at £297,000 ($387k).
Joe Flacco's wife and her harsh advice
Flacco met his wife Dana when they were extremely young, as they began dating throughout college and got married in 2011. Proud parents to five children - Stephen, Daniel, Francis, Thomas, and Evelyn - this close-knit family has been the athlete's backbone through various city relocations from Baltimore, Denver and New York.
After Flacco's leadership shone bright and saw the Cleveland Browns breach into the Wild Card round - although they bowed out to Houston Texans later in 2023 - he credited something other than his talent for the performances.
The now-39-year-old sportsman cherished these glory moments as an incredible family affair, saying after a game in 2023: "I can't say it enough, to have children that are of the age where they understand what's going on means I'm going to remember these things forever."
The quarterback also shared how fatherhood has breathed new life into his relationship with Dana in a heartwarming promotional clip for the Ravens. He said: "It's definitely changed how I spend time in the off-season. Me and my wife look at each other and wonder what we did before we had them, because you're just wrapped up in those guys. It's been a lot of fun."
However, he wasn't always on the receiving end of praise; back in 2018, Flacco took an unexpected position on the field to let then-newbie quarterback Lamar Jackson take the spotlight - and his wife Dana wasn't too impressed.
Speaking after the game at the time, Flacco said: "My wife gave me crap the one day, told me I need to look more interested out there. But I'm just trying to stay out of it. I'm not comfortable out there. I don't need to get too creative."
