George Baldock statement released as ex-Premier League star found dead aged just 31

The Greek Super League have released a statement following the tragic death of George Baldock, who was reportedly found dead in his swimming pool at the age of 31, with the league issuing their condolences

George Baldock, formerly of Sheffield United, has reportedly been found dead in his swimming pool in Greece, aged just 31, with the Greek Super League expressing its "deep sorrow".

Several outlets in Greece reported the shocking news relating to the Panathinaikos defender, who left English soil this summer and moved to the Greek outfit. Baldock has represented Greece at international level.

It is alleged concerns were raised when Baldock's wife couldn't contact him after several hours without a response. Baldock was found in the pool and emergency services were called, with a doctor part of the response unit verifying that he had tragically died.

A statement from the Greek Super League read: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Baldock had only made four appearances for Panathinaikos, including one in the Europa League. His exact cause of death will be determiend by a post-mortem examination.

The defender spent seven years with the Blades between 2017 and 2024 having previously also represented MK Dons, Northampton and Oxford. Panathinaikos have blacked out their profile picture on X and Instagram following the tragic news.

Baldock played 219 times for Sheffield United in all competitions, scoring six goals. He twice helped the Blades win promotion from the Championship into the Premier League.

Sheffield United have said: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Northampton took to social media to issue their sympathy as they said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31. George made 5 appearances in 2011 on loan from MK Dons before playing for Oxford and Sheff Utd.Sending our sincerest condolences to George’s family/friends."

England defender Harry Maguire is among the first player to pay tribute as he posted a picture of Baldock and wrote 'RIP' with a broken heart icon. Maguire had played at Sheffield United prior to Baldock arriving at Bramall Lane.
