Three killed as bus carrying American football team crashes on way to match

Coritiba Crocodiles were travelling to play an American Football match in Rio de Janeiro when the bus they were travelling in crashed, leading to the deaths of three players

Three people have been killed in a horrific crash that saw a bus carrying an American Football team flip.

Coritiba Crocodiles were on their way to face Flamengo Imperadores in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil's D1 American Football championship when the devastating incident occurred. Brazilian American Football Confederation reported the vehicle 'fell down the descent of the Serra das Araras, in Pirai (RJ), at km 225 of the Presidente Dutra Highway'.

Daniel Cross, Lucas Padilha and Lucas Barros, captain of Brazil's U20s national team, were named as victims of the crash with more injured. The match was cancelled and a vigil was held in tribute to the Crocodiles players.

Staff member Felip Muniz paid tribute to those who passed away. Muniz wrote on Instagram : "Lucas, Penguin, and Captain, still can't believe you're gone. Yesterday, unfortunately, was the day to say goodbye to three brothers.

"Our hearts are broken not to have you here with us anymore. You will be forever remembered for the amazing people you were!

"Thank you so much for giving me the honour to live unique moments with you and know that we will represent you here, on and off the [grass]. We have your back from above! The sky sure is brighter today! I LOVE YOU BOTH!!"

Coritiba Crocodiles said in a statement: "It is with deep sadness and dismay that we confirm the news of the tragic accident involving the bus carrying our team, the Coritiba Crocodiles, on the morning of this Saturday (21/09), on the way to Rio de Janeiro. The accident occurred around 10am, on the descent of Serra das Araras, in Piraí (RJ), at the height of 225km. Three deaths were confirmed in the bus, which was carrying 43 passengers.

"We are closely following the situation and giving the injured people and their families the necessary support.

"The team was on their way to an important commitment against Flamengo Imperadores, for the Brazilian American Football Championship, in a match that will take place at 2pm at the Sports Club Anchieta. In the face of this tragedy, all of our efforts are focused on supporting our team members and their loved ones. Our hearts are grieving, and we ask for everyone to send your prayers and positive energy."

The CBFA expressed their condolences and called for the public to respect the period of mourning that is now underway. They said: "The CBFA, on behalf of the entire Brazilian football community, expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as the Coritiba Crocodiles team.

"We’re following the developments closely and offering all the support needed at this difficult time. We ask that everyone respect this period of mourning, and that official information is awaited to avoid the spread of rumors. We'll continue to update as new information is confirmed."
