Liverpool are progressing with contract talks for two key defenders - Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate.

The Reds are in advanced talks with Quansah over a new deal while discussions are at the early stages with France defender Konate. Quansah, 21, signed a four-year deal in May 2023 but has yet to pen a new deal to reflect his first-team status now.

The England Under-21 defender broke through last season under Jurgen Klopp and became a mainstay in the first team. Quansah made 33 appearances last season for the Reds.

But his last contract was signed before that emergence which means he has yet to be properly reward with first-team terms. That is expected to be sorted in the coming weeks with discussions at an advanced stage.

Liverpool are also keen to tie down Konate, 25, with two years left on his current deal. The France defender signed a five-year contract when he signed from RB Leipzig in 2021.

Discussions with Konate’s representatives are at a much earlier stage but there is no rush from either side. Konate has regained his place in the starting line-up under new head coach Arne Slot to reinforce his position in the squad.

Liverpool have also been discussing the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah.

All three of those are into the final year of their contracts but the club’s sporting department is also ensuring other contracts are being dealt with, too.
