Arne Slot runs risk of repeating Jurgen Klopp mistake in first Carabao Cup game

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was his own worst enemy at times during his time at Anfield and successor Arne Slot now needs to avoid some of the same issues

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has indicated he's prepared to name a strong XI for the Carabao Cup third round tie with West Ham despite players being tired.

Slot's predecessor Jurgen Klopp received criticism at times for his reluctance to rotate, leaving senior stars at risk of burnout later in the season, though Klopp himself argued his hand was often forced by a busy schedule. Liverpool's new boss may yet end up ringing the changes on Wednesday, but early signs point to a strong selection.

"I want all of them to play, but unfortunately that is not possible because you can only play 11," he told reporters. "We will play with the best possible team, which means that players who are a bit more tired from playing a lot might mean I select different players, but they will come in today and I'll make the decision."

Klopp, to his credit, was often prepared to play significantly weakened sides in the early rounds of cup competitions. Slot appears to be opening the door to some changes, but the West Ham game will be a test of how he will adapt to the busy autumn schedule.

One man who won't be involved is Alisson. The goalkeeper has yet to fully recover from the injury which kept him out of the weekend victory over Bournemouth, meaning Caoimhin Kelleher will continue between the sticks.

"Caoimhin will be in goal on Wednesday," Slot confirmed. "Alisson is getting there but I think this game has come a bit too early. We're looking at this weekend with the game against Wolves, but it's looking a bit tight."

Federico Chiesa could also pick up more minutes after making his league debut from the bench, with Slot suggesting the new signing could earn a first start. However, the manager suggested Chiesa isn't yet capable of playing a full 90 minutes.

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup last season, beating Chelsea in the final, but conceded just three minutes into the campaign against Leicester City. Slot isn't getting ahead of himself, suggesting West Ham will offer a tough test despite the Hammers only picking up four points from their first five league outings.

"They had a tough start and faced some tough opponents," Slot said of Julen Lopetegui's side. "I saw during their games that they have had some really good spells as well and are just unlucky with results.

"They have brought in a lot of good players in the summer who haven't been implemented yet but tomorrow might be a chance for them to start. They will come back stronger because of all the quality they already had last season, what they've added and also with a good manager as well."
