LIV Golf star who wanted to 'quit' breaks silence on future after PGA Tour claims

Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra turned professional to join the LIV Golf setup in 2022, but rumours circulated that his time with the breakaway league could soon be over

Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra has claimed he has no plans to leave LIV Golf, after a report claimed the Spanish star had plans to quit the breakaway league.

Lopez-Chacarra turned professional to join the LIV setup from college golf in 2022, and since then has announced himself as one of the rising stars on the Saudi-funded circuit. In his maiden season as a pro, the Spaniard banked his first victory winning LIV Bangkok two years ago, earning £3.1 million in the process.

In the time since, the 24-year-old has become a mainstay in Sergio Garcia's Fireballs team, helping them win a the team title on home soil at LIV Andalucia earlier this summer.

Individually, Lopez-Chacarra ended the 2024 campaign in free agency, meaning he could well be left out of Garcia's team for the upcoming season if not re-signed by the 2017 Masters champion. On the back of the end of the season last month, a report from No Laying up claimed Lopez-Chacarra was ready to call it quits with the league.

This week the youngster is in DP World Tour action, having earned an invite to compete at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Whilst at the event in Scotland, Lopez-Chacarra had the chance to address the rumours on his future, and it appears he has no plans to move on.

"That's not true at all [that I want to leave]," he said of the report in an interview with Bunkered. The Spaniard did however concede that he was still unsure about where his future lies with the Fireballs heading into 2025. "I don't know what’s going to happen next year.

"I wasn't relegated so I'm still available for any team and maybe Fireballs, we'll see what Sergio decides. I would love to stay, my goal is to stay and even if they don't pick me, I can still go to LIV Promotions and play my way in, so we'll see what happens.

"Good golf will take care of itself, but I'm excited for these upcoming opportunities." This has not the first time Lopez-Chacarra has discussed what may come next in his young professional career, after his addressed his future post-LIV Golf, with the potential of going to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

As things stand, players from the LIV circuit are banned from PGA Tour, but the Spaniard is under the impression that he would be able to go to Tour Q-School if he wished having never previously been a member. "We got an email," he said of his deal last January.

"We got a paper before I sign anything and the paper says if you were never a member of the PGA Tour, the European Tour or any tours associated with the PGA Tour they have no problem. It's just another path so once my contract is done, if I wanna try Q School, I can get into those tours but right now I have a lot of time on LIV, I'm happy here and I think it's the best path for me."
