Tahith Chong update after ex-Man Utd star collapsed on pitch during Luton game

Luton star Tahith Chong suffered a head injury late in the first half of defeat away to Plymouth Argyle but manager Rob Edwards has provided a positive update on his condition

Former Manchester United winger Tahith Chong is expected to make a speedy recovery after sustaining a shocking head injury for Luton Town in Friday night’s Championship defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

The Hatters star appeared to collapse late in the first half of the 3-1 defeat at Home Park and displayed a nasty bump on his head.

Chong received a lengthy spell of treatment on the pitch before being helped off by medics and Luton boss Rob Edwards played down any long-term concern at full-time and said the 24-year-old will be monitored over the coming days for concussion symptoms.

“He’s up and about and fine,” Edwards said. “So we’ll see the extent of it concussion wise. He was a bit sore but he’s fine.”

The defeat leaves Luton 16th in the table with only two wins in seven games. But Edwards, who has been hoping to stage another promotion push after last season’s relegation from the Premier League, said he had no complaints over their latest loss.

"Credit to the opposition, at both ends of the pitch they were better - they were more ruthless at one end and defended better at the other,” he said.

"I think we got into their final third 40-odd times, twice as often as they did, but we didn't make their goalkeeper work enough.

"We weren't clinical enough at one end, then didn't defend well enough at the other - it's not a good recipe to win a football match. It's really frustrating to come away losing a game talking about both ends of the pitch."

Chong received medical attention but did walk off the pitch without the need for a stretcher

Plymouth’s second win of the campaign came as a boost for Wayne Rooney, who appeared under immediate pressure at the start of the campaign after opening with a 4-0 defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday.

But they are now up to 13th spot ahead of Saturday’s action and the Manchester United legend told Sky Sports: “We were underestimated at the start of the season before we kicked a ball and then especially after the first game.

"But I think we've shown real character, we've shown the type of team we want to be, we're getting the ball forward and creating chances.

"It's a big win for us tonight against a good Luton team. It's a big win for a lot of our young players. I was delighted for the lads tonight, delighted for the fans - great atmosphere again, so a great start to the weekend."
