Lee Carsley knows who is to blame after England's humiliation against Greece

The Three Lions were beaten 2-1 at Wembley on Thursday night after going without Harry Kane - due to injury - or any recognised striker and attempting to fit in all their attack-minded midfielders

Lee Carsley blamed himself after England were humiliated at Wembley.

Carsley crammed all of his attacking players into the same line-up but then admitted they only practised it in training for 20 minutes.

Greece's two-goal hero Vangelis Pavlidis struck a 94th minute winner as the visitors became the lowest ranked team to win on English soil. It could damage Carsley’s chances of getting the job on a permanent basis as his tactics of going all-out attack backfired in spectacular fashion.

England interim boss Carsley said: “It was a challenging night for us and we were second best. It's disappointing. We experimented and it didn't come off. You have to have the courage to try things, but I'm happy to take the blame for this, because it was my idea.”

Carsley must now take his players to Finland on Sunday but says nothing has changed for his own future despite the defeat.

Carsley added: “We've spoken about setbacks and how you respond to that. It will be a good test for us now, going over to Finland.

"It doesn't change anything. My remit remains clear and I'm in charge for three camps. This is still one of the best jobs in the world. I will give it everything I've got for the next three games, nothing has changed in that respect.

"It’s important that I give it everything I’ve got for the next three games and I am really happy and comfortable with the communication I have with my bosses. I said at the start that I wouldn’t rule myself in or out, and that is still the case. I’m comfortable in my position where I am and the remit is clear.”

Greece celebrated wildly after their win and Pavlidis dedicated the historic win to Greece defender George Baldock, who died earlier this week.

He said: "It''s a special night because of him. We have thought about him a lot since we heard it the news. He was a special guy and we gave everything for him."
