Liverpool target 'next Jadon Sancho' as new transfer succession plan takes shape

Liverpool and some of their Premier League rivals are keeping a close on the development of Jamie Gittens, who has enjoyed a fine start to the season for Borussia Dortmund

Liverpool have sent scouts to keep tabs on Jamie Gittens as interest in the Borussia Dortmund winger ramps up.

Gittens, 20, has become the latest England youth international to flourish in the Bundesliga after quitting Manchester City in 2020, despite some initial injury struggles and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The versatile winger has enjoyed a fine start to the new season after netting both of Dortmund's goals in their opening day win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the league and another brace in the Champions League. And, unsurprisingly, it seems his form under new head coach Nuri Sahin has not gone unnoticed.

Clubs throughout Europe are said to be keeping a close watch on Gittens' development - and the youngster has Premier League suitors in the form of Liverpool.

A new report from German outlet Bild claims the Reds have sent scouts to check on Gittens, who is also being tracked by both Chelsea and Tottenham, though it remains to be seen if any of the trio will firm up their interest in the New Year.

Gittens came through the academy ranks at Manchester City after joining them as a teenager following a stint at Reading. He left the Premier League champions without making a senior appearance, though, in a move similar to that made by Jadon Sancho.

Liverpool's interest in Gittens, who primarily plays on the left wing for Dortmund, could indicate that they are planning for life after Luis Diaz, who is said to have some pretty high-profile suitors himself.

Diaz's father has made no secret of the fact that his son would be at home playing for Barcelona, who are long-term admirers of the Colombia star. Paris Saint-Germain were also linked with him back in the summer.

The 27-year-old has been in sizzling form so far this term and has three years left on his current deal. But the fact Liverpool have now been linked with Gittens after pursuing Anthony Gordon in the summer is a hint that the club's recruitment department already has one eye on the future.

The Reds are also likely drawing up a succession plan for Mohamed Salah, who is now 32 and inside the final 12 months of his contract with no indication yet as to whether or not he and the club will agree to fresh terms.
