David Beckham paid tribute to Lionel Messi, and the rest of the Inter Miami squad, after the former England midfielder's MLS franchise got their hands on the Supporters' Shield for the very first time.

The Supporters' Shield is handed out to the team with the best regular season record, with Miami swooping the title after a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew at Lower.com field. Once again, the evening belonged to Messi, after the Argentine scored twice in the away win.

Two goals late in the first half, including a superb free-kick, saw the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner give his team a healthy advantage heading into the break, moving them 45 minutes away from the title.

Within a minute of the restart though it was game on, as Columbus hit back with a goal through Diego Rossi to reduce the deficit. This goal advantage was soon restored though, this time through Messi's former Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, who scored his 18th league of the season just three minutes later.

Keen to stay in the game, Columbus grabbed another goal back via a Cucho Hernandez penalty just after the hour-mark, before his team were reduced to 10 men two minutes later after Rudy Camacho received a second yellow card. Despite playing with one less, Columbus had a golden opportunity to level things up, once again from the penalty spot.

Hernandez however could not repeat his heroics, this time missing from 12-yards with just five minutes left to play to ensure it was Miami who came away with three points, and the Eastern Conference crown. Club owner Beckham took to social media to hail the achievement.

"So proud to see our players lift the Supporters Shield after a great win in Columbus," he wrote on Instagram. "Another amazing achievement in the history of this football club and so happy to bring this trophy to the best fans in the League. Now we go again and onto the next one."

Attention will soon turn to the playoffs, which will crown the MLS Cup champion in December. Ever the professional, star of the show, Messi kept his feet firmly on the ground with work still to do. "The first objective has been achieved and now we have to think about what's next," he said post-match.

"The first round is three games but then it's one game and anything can happen. But we have the great advantage of playing all the games at home, which is what we were looking for. We are very strong at home." Miami have two more regular season matches to go against Toronto and New England Revolution, before the playoffs get underway at the end of this month.
