Bayern Munich star Harry Kane

German media turn on England captain Harry Kane for going missing in big Bayern game

England captain Harry Kane has been criticised in the German media over his performance in Bayern Munich's draw against reigning Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen

A German newspaper has laid into England captain Harry Kane following Bayern Munich's 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Kane left Tottenham for Bayern last summer, becoming the club's record transfer as he made a £100million move to Germany. The striker has been in prolific for Bayern and scored 44 goals in 45 games across all competitions in his debut season to win the Golden Shoe award.

However, Bayern failed to lift any trophies after they were knocked out in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Real Madrid and finished third in the Bundesliga behind Leverkusen and Stuttgart.

They were also beaten by RB Leipzig in the German super cup and knocked out of the DFB Pokal in the second round by third tier side Saarbrucken. And Kane has now been accused of failing to deliver in big games after he failed to have a single shot against Leverkusen.

Writing for German outlet Bild, journalist Walter M. Straten delivered a stinging verdict of Kane's performance. "Lots of effort, too little success. Harry Kane is hanging around alone up front," he wrote.

"What good are three goals against Kiel if he doesn't even get a shot on goal in a big game like yesterday? Fairness dictates that we shouldn't unleash the Kane-can't-win-a-title curse now. Especially since he had to leave injured."

Kane was forced off with an ankle injury late in the game and he is now a doubt for Bayern's upcoming Champions League clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday as a result. However, Bayern did offer a positive update ahead of the game.

In a statement, they said: "Harry Kane took a painful knock to his ankle in Bayern's Bundesliga game at home to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Examinations by the club's medical unit on Sunday determined a positive development.

"Kane will continue to receive appropriate treatment." Bayern boss Vincent Kompany added: "Hopefully it's nothing serious. I'm not a doctor but I hope he can play against Aston Villa on Wednesday."
