Former middleweight boxing star Anthony Ogogo has had a tough journey, undergoing intense surgery to rebuild his nose using a rib, in an effort to fix issues from a previous in-ring injury. Once hailed as the golden boy of British boxing and predicted for world title success, Anthony was forced to hang up his gloves in 2019, just 12 fights into his professional career, reports OK!

A fractured eye socket sustained during a match against Craig Cunningham three years prior marked the end, causing irreversible damage that left him effectively blind in one eye. In a bid to make a comeback, he underwent surgery nine times, shelling out over £100,000 on procedures in the United States. But seven years after winning bronze in London, the dream was shattered, replaced with waves of despair that led him to grapple with depression and suicidal thoughts.

He later switched lanes towards appearances on Strictly Come Dancing and sports commentary. Now, the boxing pro is set to join the sixth series of the Channel 4 reality show Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins cast, which sees celebrities endure SAS winter warfare training in New Zealand's southern islands, alongside Love Island's Georgia Harrison, TOWIE's Pete Wicks, Torchwood star John Barrowman, and Boris Johnson's Celebrity Big Brother sister Rachel Johnson.

As of 2024, former boxer Anthony has an astonishing net worth of £750,000, per celebsmoney.com. Reflecting on his boxing days during an interview with Metro.co.uk, he confessed, "It sounds horrible, but it was like watching another bloke have sex with your missus," and continued with the harrowing add-on, "Being handcuffed to your seat and not being able to do anything about it."

Post-retirement in March, Anthony expressed his deep emotions in a statement that ended powerfully: "I've been through a lot in my career. I've had 17 operations and suffered every pain imaginable. I've won, lost, cried and hurt. But if you were to ask me would I do it again? In a heartbeat. I love this game."

Though still reeling from his departure from the ring at age 35, the Lowestoft native is slowly finding solace as he pivots to professional wrestling with All Elite Wrestling, allowing him to embrace new chapters of his life while coming to terms with the bygone days of boxing.

"When I first retired, I was sick of the sight of boxing. Hearing the word boxing made my skin crawl, I got so angry, so bitter, so aggressive. I became a person I didn't want to be," he admitted. "I was the worst version of myself. I couldn't bear watching people live out my dream, fighting for British, European and world titles, making lots of money. That is what I should have been doing. But eventually, I started to realise it's not just my dream, it's their dream too. I had to let it go and walk away."

Back in 2019, during his procedure, Anthony had one of his ribs taken out in an ambitious attempt to reconstruct his nose. Through an Instagram post, he let fans in on his experience with a personal video, disclosing: "Yesterday I had an operation on my eye, ninth one, to try to get a little bit more vision out of my eye."

He resolutely underscored that his time in boxing was over, emphasizing, "Not to get back in the boxing ring, no, those days are gone, I know that but just for quality of life."

Delving into his health struggles, he elaborated, "I had an operation on my nose today, because it's badly fractured and I can't breathe properly they're trying to straighten it because I keep getting throat infections. They had to cut me open and use some rib, some cartilage and some bone from my rib to make my nose!"

After the disastrous bout that resulted in his first professional loss, Anthony was left with such extreme injuries that he was declared legally blind, lost his driving licence, and described the harrowing experience of his eye "basically exploded."
