Harry Maguire's contract at Old Trafford is winding down

Man Utd set to activate Harry Maguire clause and could repeat summer transfer move

Harry Maguire's contract includes an option which allows Manchester United to retain him for a further 12 months as they weigh up cashing in on the England defender

Manchester United have a one-year option in Harry Maguire's contract that they are poised to take up.

The defender could find himself out of contract in the summer but the Red Devils are ready to activate a clause in their favour which stops him leaving for free. Maguire is by no means a regular in Manchester but continues to be called upon by Erik ten Hag.

Back in 2019 he became the world's most expensive defender, setting the Red Devils back £80million, and they would be loathed to lose him for nothing. Maguire picked up an injury in the team's last outing at Aston Villa, but did score an equaliser at Porto prior to that.

The signing of Matthijs de Ligt back in the summer further pushed Maguire down the pecking order, but the club have continued to struggle defensively.

Maguire saw the captain's armband taken off him once Ten Hag arrived and has been linked with a move away. He's remained at the club though and now those at Old Trafford are ready to active the option in his deal - something they also plan to do with Amad - reports the MEN.

United are likely to take up the clause in Maguire's contract regardless of how they see his future. The Daily Star understands that Ten Hag is willing to sanction the defender's sale for as little as £10 - which would represent a massive loss.

Back in the summer the Manchester outfit activated a one-year option in Aaron Wan-Bissaka's deal which meant they retained the right-back. It then allowed them to eventually sell the player to West Ham, making £50m on their asset.

Maguire himself has backed his underfire manager as pressure ramps up on Ten Hag. The England international has featured in five of the club's seven Premier League outings, starting on three occasions, and insists that the players must bear some of the brunt for the team's poor form.

He said: "As a footballer, it's easy to look around and blame other people and blame your teammate or blame the staff or the tactics. You've got to look at yourself. We're the ones that go on the pitch. We're the ones that have to defend. You've got to take responsibility."
